The digital meat thermometer we have today wouldn’t have been possible without multiple scientists improving upon the concept of measuring how hot or cold something is. Although Galileo Galilei was believed to be the first inventor of the thermometer, a man by the name of Santorio Santorio also came up with a model around the same time. Santorio’s thermometer included a numerical scale, but neither his nor Galileo’s thermometers were accurate enough to be consider reliable.

A German physicist by the name of Daniel Gabriel Fahrenheit came up with the first thermometer to use mercury and have a standardized scale. The Fahrenheit scale is still in use today, although most thermometers are digital and no longer contain mercury.
