Valentine’s Day is a celebration of love for your partner, your family, your friends and yourself. Though the holiday has been associated with romantic love since the Middle Ages, you can have fun with the day no matter which relationships you’ll be celebrating this year — or even if you’re not celebrating any. There’s no better way to make Valentine’s Day extra special than to spice up your space with festive decorations.

When looking for Valentine’s Day decor, you’ll find many options; it may even be hard to decide what to purchase. You can buy everything from traditional red and pink decorative hears and cupids to cute animals and foods. Garlands, banners, signs and paper goods are all popular items for Valentine’s Day decorating.

What you choose will depend a bit on where you plan to display it. If you’re going to decorate at home, you may want something different than if you are providing décor for your child’s school party. Either way, make sure you hold on to your new decorations after Valentine’s Day is over so you can reuse them next year.

The aesthetic of your decor should make you feel excited for the holiday, so take your time while shopping. You don’t need to buy a frilly heart pillow if you would really prefer an adorable hedgehog with a pink balloon. Valentine’s Day is all about the joy that comes from love, after all, so make sure you adore your embellishments.

Once you get your decorations, it’s time to set about putting them up. Are you wondering how to hang a Valentine’s banner? You can use strong but removable adhesives like Command strips, but make sure to follow the directions on the package. Command strips do not damage walls and they are easy to take down later, provided you use them correctly. Depending on your preferences, you can hang items like garland or paper hearts with string, nails or tacks.

Do you plan to use Valentine’s string lights? These are a great way to add some sparkle to your home. Carefully wrap the lights around door frames and railings or drape them along walls. Secure with nails or tacks if necessary, but be sure not to put anything sharp through the wires themselves. There are also special adhesive strips for hanging strings of lights that might work well for you.

In addition to decorating your home, there are also many fun ways to celebrate the holiday. You can have a romantic dinner for two or host a party for friends and family. If you’re not into big parties, you could arrange a movie night or an outing with your special someone. If you are decorating at home, staying in for the holiday can be a great idea!

DWYM Fun Fact

The history of Valentine’s Day goes back centuries and is believed by some to be a mix of ancient Roman and Christian traditions. It is most commonly thought that the holiday was named after St. Valentine, a Catholic priest who performed secret marriages against orders from Emperor Claudius II in the third century A.D. He was later sentenced to death.

Some scholars believe the modern-day celebration of Valentine’s Day also owes some of its traditions to the ancient Roman festival of Lupercalia, but other historians question the veracity of this. In any case, Lupercalia was less about love and more about encouraging fertility and a good harvest through various rituals (some of which were R-rated).

In the fifth century, Pope Gelasius I was the one credited with combining St. Valentine’s Day with Lupercalia to expel the pagan rituals.

The Valentines Day Decor Tips and Advice

  • It can be very easy to order too many Valentine’s Day decorations when shopping online. After all, there are so many beautiful decor items out there! It can be helpful to list all the places you’d like to display something and shop with that list in mind, rather than letting the internet tell you what you need.
  • Use a plastic storage bin to house your Valentine’s Day decorations from one year to the next. Most can be reused.
  • Be prepared for an onslaught of glitter with your heart-inspired decor! Baby wipes usually do an excellent job of removing glitter from surfaces.
  • Have tape, tacks, nails and removable adhesives on hand to get your Valentine’s decor hung up once it arrives.
  • You can add Valentine’s Day decor to every room in the house with themed flowers, candles, towels. The sky’s the limit; let your creativity be your guide.
