Our Vanity For Girl Buying Guide
Young children who watch their parents getting ready at a bathroom or bedroom vanity may naturally become interested in the beauty tools kept and used there. Eventually, their interest may extend to using those items themselves. As a result, they might “borrow” combs, makeup and jewelry and start experimenting. But an adult vanity may not be the best place for them to play, especially if expensive makeup products are involved.
Getting your children their own kid-sized vanities gives them a space of their own to learn about this part of grown-up life. As they graduate from play to taking makeup more seriously, you can also provide low-maintenance beauty products for your kids’ use. And, you can place the vanity in play areas and children’s bedrooms.
Children’s vanities fall into two categories: playsets and real furniture. Younger kids do well with the first kind because these vanities are made with bright colors and have fun accessories like fake makeup, hair dryers that actually work and plastic jewelry. They work well for pretend play
You should make sure to read the product’s description to verify what ages these playsets are appropriate for, though. When it comes to buying children’s toys like these, there is nothing more important than safety. Check for recalls, avoid toxic materials and stay away from toys that have small or loose parts.
Older kids and teens will appreciate a well-made vanity with a comfortable seat and decent drawer space. These vanities qualify as adult furniture and will cost more, so you’ll want one that they won’t outgrow too quickly unless you can pass it down to a younger person. Some have multiple storage spaces, which is a nice bonus.
Another good feature you may want is a three-way mirror. These feature adjustable panels so you can see your face at different angles. Some mirrors are also made to move up and down and from side to side. Some may also be lighted or magnified for extra visibility.
DWYM Fun Fact
She may not have had a piece of furniture called a vanity, but Queen Grimhilde — the not-commonly-used name of the Evil Queen in Walt Disney’s “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” from 1937— is probably the most famous character in pop culture known for her vanity.
The Evil Queen did have a huge mirror, though — as everyone knows. Her magic mirror was large enough to show most of her form after she ascended a short staircase and stood on a platform where the mirror held a high place of honor between two pillars. It also held a slave within, which informed her regularly at her request that she was still the most beautiful person in the land.
Most days, when she asked, “Magic mirror on the wall, who is the fairest one of all?” it responded, “You are the fairest one of all.” But on that fateful day at the very start of the film, the mirror indicated that someone else had usurped her place. The Queen quickly lost it and set out to destroy the innocent young maiden called Snow White with that notorious poison apple.
The Vanity For Girl Tips and Advice
- Toys that use electricity (like working hair dryers) should be “UL Approved.” This means it meets the safety and sustainability standards set forth by Underwriters’ Laboratories.
- Vanities can have old-fashioned style, with ornate designs on the tables, mirrors and stools. Modern ones generally have cleaner edges and not as much embellishment. Which one you choose depends on personal preference.
- Check the dimensions of the vanity before buying. It’s hard to tell how large they are from the pictures, and you won’t want one that is too large or too small for the intended space.
- Vanity table mirrors should be made of real glass; foil or plastic mirrors may look cheap and won’t be as useful.
