Ryobi is a respected name among both professional contractors and DIY warriors. Founded as a die-casting manufacturer in 1943, the company became well known as a manufacturer of automotive parts. But over the years, the company’s tools have become a staple of home workshops and job sites across the U.S.

Ryobi products are often more affordable than some competing brands. Although they certainly aren’t as inexpensive as “budget” table saws, they’re a nice middle-of-the-road product that provides durability and quality without breaking the bank.

If you’re shopping for a table saw, you’ll inevitably find the Ryobi brand among all the options. The company sells a wide range of table saw types, from compact, portable models to saws with stands that are designed to stay in one fixed place or roll around. You can also find Ryobi table saws that have wheels to give you flexibility in your workspace.

Ryobi offers a variety of table saw types and builds, including:

  • Compact table saws — This type of model doesn’t come with a stand, but it’s perfect if you have a tabletop or stand that you can mount it on.
  • Folding stand table saws — If you occasionally take your table saw on the go, this table saw has a stand that can be folded up.
  • Rolling stand table saws – Wheels make it easy to move your table saw around your workshop while you’re working.

Ryobi also sells individual parts for your table saw, including portable band saws, misting kits, plunge saws, hand planers and router tables. Many of its parts are easily replaceable to allow you to keep your table saw going for many years.

What to Look For

  • Rip capacity is essential in any saw, but it’s especially important to look for it if you’re buying a compact or portable table saw. You can find smaller table saws that pack plenty of power, but you have to look at the motor and rip capacity.
  • Surface area is always important with a table saw. Make sure you’ll have plenty of space to work on both the right and left sides of the blade.
  • In addition to workspace, look closely at the table to make sure you’ll have somewhere to store your tools, both while you’re working and when you’re between work sessions.
  • Once your table saw arrives, you’ll have to set it up. Your kit should include the mounting hardware you’ll need, as well as instructions.
  • Kickback can be a hazard with any table saw. Look for a saw that builds in anti-kickback pawls to keep that risk at a minimum.
  • Working with any tool that has a blade can be precarious. Wear safety glasses and make sure your blade guard is in place whenever possible.
  • Stability is essential with a table saw. You’ll want a setup that reduces vibrations to make sure you stay comfortable throughout your work.
  • Some table saws come with power cords. Although this can be more convenient than having to charge a battery, it does limit where you can set it up. Make sure you have a work area that’s close to a power outlet. You’ll also want to avoid creating a tripping hazard, whether you’re plugging directly into the wall or using an extension cord.
  • Noise level is also a consideration. If you need to keep it down, Ryobi can be a little on the louder side compared to other models in its price range.
  • If you need to cut grooves, make sure the table saw you choose — Ryobi or otherwise — supports dado blades. Some Ryobi tables do while others don’t.

The earliest table saw was primitive compared to what we see today. Invented in 1777 by Samuel Miller in Southampton, England, the earliest build involved a fixed arbor and table. In order to change the height of the cut, you had to physically move the table up or down. The table was heavy and the blade was made of steel, giving it plenty of power, but to cut wood, you had to clamp it to the table unless you wanted to hold it. Over the years, innovators continued to perfect the design so that woodworkers had a wide range of choices, from portable, compact tables to high-capacity stationary ones.
