People have known for a long time the our weakest spot is our head, so it’s important to protect it however we can. In the 8th century BCE, Spartan warriors wore helmets that covered most of their face. Those helmets had a large cheek plate and a long nasal plate, leaving mainly their eyes exposed. Variations on this type of helmet were worn in Greece and Italy for several hundred years. Too bad they didn’t have the materials to make a visor back then.
