On November 10, 1903, Birmingham, Alabama resident Mary Anderson received a patent for the wiper blade or “window cleaning device for electric cars and other vehicles to remove snow, ice or sleet from the window.” But sadly she never profited from the genius invention. After receiving the patent, Anderson tried to sell the idea to a Canadian company, which told her the device didn’t have any value, but the mechanical windshield wipers eventually became standard additions to cars by the early 19th century.
