While license plate frames typically last for many years, they can sometimes bend, rust or get knocked off the car and need to be replaced. When searching for a new license plate frame, one of the most important factors to keep in mind is the laws in your state. Some states have certain rules around the type of license plate frames you can have, what size and shape they should be and what color they should be.

In terms of style, there are three different types. Slim license plate frames have an inconspicuous design with a very thin trim that is hardly noticeable. They are more functional than stylish, and ensure your plate and registration tags are fully visible. Semi-wide bottom plate frames have a wide bottom and open corners, which allows your registration tags to be fully visible. Keep in mind that some of these frames cover up the center message of the plate, which may not be allowed in certain states. Wide bottom frames cover the bottom base of your plate, including the corners. These are also only allowed in certain states.

When you’re looking at the size of the license plate frame, be sure to measure your license plate as well as look at the rules the state offers. Check those measurements against the product specifications to ensure you’re getting something that will fit your current plate and will be legal in your state.

Keep mounting in mind as well. Typically, license plate frames are mounted using two or four screws. The more screws the better, so that the plate doesn’t rattle around when the vehicle moves. You want to ensure it sits flush against the car or truck.

• Durability is key when it comes to license plate frames. Wherever possible, opt for high-quality materials and construction, as that will last longer than flimsier versions. Poorly made license plate frames or those made from inferior materials can end up rusting or corroding after a few years or even chipping and breaking.
• When it comes to materials, most license plate frames are made from metal such as aluminum, zinc or steel. Some metals are lightweight while others are heftier. If you’re looking for other options, carbon fiber is also a good one. Keep in mind that plastic license plate frames are typically not as durable as their metal counterparts and can tend to crack in a short amount of time.
• It’s best to go with a license plate frame that comes with an installation kit, which typically includes screws, washers, caps and sometimes a screwdriver. This is more convenient than looking for the installation parts yourself and ensuring they are all the same size.
• Keep in mind that some license plate frames are sold in singles – but you may need to change both the front and back license plate frame of your vehicle. Check to see how many frames are included and purchase accordingly.
• Just like the rest of your vehicle, the license plate frame can get covered in road debris, salt and dirt. Whenever you wash your car, be sure to scrub the license plate and frame as well, which can help to prolong its life, refresh its sheen and reduce the occurrence of rust and corrosion.
