The trolling motor was invented in 1934 by O.G. Schmidt of Wheatland, North Dakota. He first invented a copper soldering torch, and he did well enough with this creation to move his operations to Fargo. Since this was close to the North Dakota-Minnesota border, he named his company The Minn Kota Manufacturing Company. The company is still in business and produces trolling motors to this day.
