Felt is used for sewing and crafting projects, and it can be made into everything from decorations and ornaments to felt bulletin boards. If you’re putting together something that requires green felt, you have a number of options.

Wool felt is the most expensive kind, as it is made from wool-producing animals like alpacas, sheep and llamas. Although the look and feel of wool felt is more luxurious than regular craft felt, there usually is no need to buy the costlier versions.

Craft felt is usually made from synthetic fibers like acrylic, polyester or nylon. It can cost about half as much (or even less) than wool felt. You can also buy stiffened felt; this version does not drape, and it can be propped up.

Craft and wool felt are sold in every color you could possibly imagine, and some even have glitter embedded into the fibers. If you need felt numbers or letters, you can find pre-cut versions made with adhesive backings.

The standard thickness for craft felt is 1.6 millimeters, or 0.063 inches, although you can also get it in other thicknesses as well. It is usually sold by the yard or in sheets, and it is easy to cut, glue onto craft projects or paint on. For the most part, the material should not shrink or fade with the passage of time. Unless you use acrylic felt on clothing, you should not really have to wash it that often, which will aid in its longevity.

If the material gets stained, try spot cleaning it first. You may be able to hand-wash it or put it in your machine on a delicate cycle with cold water. Refer to the product page when shopping for specific care instructions.

Never put felt crafts in your dryer, because doing so will ruin the fabric. If the felt starts to fray along the edges, just snip the excess material off with sharp scissors.

• If you need a particular color of felt for your project, know that the pictures are not always an exact representation of what the felt actually looks like. Read written descriptions and reviews for a clearer sense of the color.
• There are many different shades of green, and many will work for decorations. Pair your green felt with traditional red, gold and white, or try something different like pink or burgundy for a neat twist.
• Polyester thread and embroidery floss are best to use if you want to sew your felt; they are stronger and more durable than cotton sewing thread.
• Felt is often thick, so you need sharp scissors to cut through it. For cleaner edges, use embroidery scissors. You can use a rotary cutter for larger pieces.
• If you must wash your felt crafts, lay them flat to dry.
