Our Buying Guide

By now you’ve likely been through enough cheap vacuum cleaners to know that investing a little money in the product you’ll be using to clean the messes around your home really can make all the difference. And while Dyson-branded vacuum cleaners aren’t necessarily the most affordable, you really get a lot of bang for your buck with these products. According to the Dyson website, these sucking machines are “engineered to deep clean your home,” meaning you’ll be able to skip out on the annual professional carpet cleaning costs and get up spills, pet hair and so much more every time you vacuum.

The various makes and models are designed to suit your lifestyle. Do you need a vacuum that can be easily picked up and maneuvered up and down sets of stairs? Need one that will pick up crumbs, Barbie shoes and more that somehow escape your child while sitting in the back seat of your car? You’ll know the right vacuum when you see it, but in both cases, cordless, easy-to-maneuver vacuums could be in your best interest. Some Dysons easily transform into a handheld vacuum. But, only you know what it’s like to pick up after your family, so trust your judgment because you definitely know best. And you can rest assured when it comes to spilled milk, muddy paw prints and more that life throws onto your floor, Dyson’s seen it (and cleaned it) all before.

Definitely keep exactly how you’ll be using these in mind when preparing to purchase the product that will work for you. No matter which Dyson vacuum you choose, you’re sure to find one that fits your budget.

DWYM Fun Fact

Did you know that Dyson vacuum cleaners were the first-ever bagless vacuums of their kind? James Dyson, the inventor, set out to make a vacuum to top all vacuums in 1978. He had recently created a “cyclone tower” for a factory that separated bits of paint from air using centrifugal force and set out to do the same — granted, on a smaller scale — for homemakers everywhere. Five years and thousands of prototypes later, the first bagless vacuum cleaner was created. Pretty neat, huh?

The Tips and Advice

  • Be mindful of size. The size of the vacuum you’re going to purchase really depends on your needs. Are you using the vacuum cleaner to tidy up a two-story dwelling complete with kids and pets? Go big or go home, in terms of dust and dirt-holding capacity. Are you, instead, cleaning a studio apartment? Maybe a smaller, cordless option with a shorter battery life will suffice for you. Regardless, the size of your space will make a difference when considering the size of the vacuum you’ll need.
  • Consider battery life. In a similar vein to size, you’ll want to think carefully about the ideal battery life for your situation. Some Dyson models offer up to 60 minutes of run time, while others offer only 40 minutes. The length of the battery life will also vary depending upon which mode you’re using — some Dysons can run for six minutes at the highest setting before the battery will need to be recharged.
  • Think about storage. You’ll also want to think about where you’ll be storing your vacuum when it’s not in use. Do you have a walk-in closet to keep your vacuum tucked away? Or will you vacuum be shoved into any available corner? The storage method will come into play in a big way, as you wouldn’t want a vacuum dominating too much of your valuable space.
  • Consider how you’ll use it. This may seem like a no-brainer, but given the fact that Dyson has a variety of makes and models to choose from, you’ll want to think about what types of messes you find yourself cleaning most often and cater to those needs. For instance, if you have mostly hardwood floors, a vacuum that’s great for deep-cleaning carpets isn’t necessarily the one for you.
  • Remember — bagless vacuums make for easy clean-up reminders. One of the greatest advantages to Dyson vacuums is the brand’s bagless technology. With the bagless models, you’re never having to check if the bag is full because you can easily see the debris, dust and more that your vacuum is sucking up. When the container is full, empty it and get back to vacuuming, hassle-free. As an added bonus, there’s no purchase of vacuum bags required. The Dyson V7 model offers a hygienic bin emptying process, so you have no need for touching the dirt and grime yourself.
  • You’ll also want to weight the filtration systems of each vacuum. Some Dysons have a whole-machine HEPA filtration system that actually produces cleaner air than what’s in your home.
  • Attachments matter. It’s a little unrealistic to think that one vacuum could do it all — unless it’s got the right attachments. A smaller nozzle that allows you to really clean the cobwebs out of corners and more might be needed to suit all of your cleaning needs, so make sure you’re paying close attention to what each make and model comes equipped with before settling on the one for you.
  • Canister vs. Upright. You’ll have to choose the type of vacuum you’ll need, but as previously mentioned, the space you’ll be using it in can dictate that. For instance, if you have a lot of stairs to go up and down, a canister can be easier to maneuver and may be the option for you. However, uprights can offer all of the deep cleaning bristles and more that you need to really get the grime out of carpet and more.
