While some chairs are designed specifically for the beach, others can be used there and at other locations, like campgrounds, ball games and tailgating parties. A classic, standard beach chair has arms, reclines and folds up. They can be short or longer chaise lounges, and they may have trays to hold your stuff and small canopies to cover your head.

You’ll find ones with straps for ease of carrying; anything too heavy will be hard to transport to and from wherever you’re going. Even though community pools and beach resorts usually have their own chairs, you never know if they’ll be available or comfortable enough, so you should always have your own in your trunk.

Zero-gravity chairs have been popular for years and are made with ergonomically designed, NASA-inspired technology for relieving pressure on your lower spine and back. They don’t always lay flat, but you can adjust them in almost infinite ways. These chairs can be heavier, so you don’t usually see people dragging them to the beach or pool. They can accommodate up to 200-300 pounds and sit up higher off the ground.

Beach chairs can sit lower to the ground; the standard height ranges from 8 to 12 inches, but shorter and taller designs are available. Remember that while taller chairs are easier to get in and out from, lower ones are easier to stretch out in. If you need extra width, look for oversized ones.

The frames can be made from weather-resistant wood, weather and rust-resistant aluminum, powder-coated steel and recycled plastic. Steel is more robust than aluminum and should last longer. Recycled plastic chairs can be pretty expensive, and backpack beach chairs with extra features can also be on the higher end.

DWYM Fun Fact

Now that you have the perfect beach chair, how can you prevent your beach umbrella from falling or flying away? Funny as it sounds, this can be very dangerous if the umbrella travels fast and hits someone.

Instead of simply stabbing it down into the sand, use a back and forth rocking motion until the post is 1/3 down into the ground. Then, open it up and tilt it into the wind. Keep in mind that wind directions change throughout the day, so you should keep an eye on things.

The Beach Lawn Chair Tips and Advice

  • Chair canopies cannot be separated from the seats and provide shade to the top part of the body.
  • Basic, inexpensive folding beach chairs may have cupholders, but they often don’t adjust to different positions and offer little padding.
  • Sand chairs are the lowest to the ground and are great for sitting right at (or in) the ocean’s edge.
  • Wood and plastic beach chairs usually don’t have padding, but you can BYOC (bring your own cushions) as long as they’re waterproof.
  • For more comfort, look for beach chairs with built-in headrests.
