Our Take

The Apple Lightning to USB Cable is the perfect size for idle charging from a laptop or other desktop device. It's Apple's own certified cable, and that means the security of a one-year warranty. These cables will both charge and transmit data effectively.

What other experts liked

“It’s the same quality as the one that came originally with my phone and that one lasted three years.”
- New York Mag
The three-foot Apple Lightning cable gives you the same reliable charging power as its six-foot sister but at a more manageable size. The three-foot length is perfect for keeping in your car, purse, or travel bag as a backup charger...
- Lifewire
The cable that comes with your iPhone is covered under your device’s limited one-year warranty against defects in materials and workmanship. So if your cable ends up frayed to the point that it’s unusable, it’s worth heading to an Apple...
- Macworld
If you're wary of using a third-party cable with your smartphone or tablet, you should know that Apple sells a USB-C-to-Lightning cable of its own. You can feel confident knowing that it won't overheat or damage your device. This cable...

They are very simple cables that mimic the aesthetic on Any of Apple's other first-party cables.

All of these cables come with the same exact design except for the length which makes them different. The greatest thing about these iPhone lightning cables is that, even if they are termed as charging cables, you can use them...
- Top Best Product Review
There’s no disputing the fact that Apple’s own Lightning cables work well. I would take one of these over a cheap knock-off on Amazon any day.
- Forbes
White and useful nonetheless, you might want to buy direct from Apple. Which is fine! The standard cable that ships with most Apple products is the 1m cable. Does what it says on the tin.
- Macworld
Over a span of one year, going with a certified cable is going to save you 300 hours of charging time. Surely that’s worth the extra 3 bucks? We think so.

Reports of counterfeit cables being sold under the Apple brand. Reports of peeling cable sheath. Reports of DOA units.

But despite being the cable that comes with your phone, Apple’s cable just isn’t the best option out there. The cable’s weakest point is its neck, where the soft-touch cable meets the plastic connector housing. The neck is slightly reinforced...

Although it isn't as durable as other options — one of ours broke after less than a year of regular use.

Authentic Lightning cables from Apple are WELL EXPENSIVE and this, depending on your budget, can be rather annoying. If you run multiple iOS devices, keeping them all charged – if you lose or break the lightning cable they came with...
- Know Your Mobile
They are not tangle free.

The problem with virtually all Lightning cables I’ve ever tried — including the genuine Apple versions — is durability. They inevitably fray and break. The point where the cable connects to the Lighting connector is a particularly weak point, but...

The AmazonBasics Lightning to USB A Cable is the go-to charging solution for those on a budget. The look mimics Apple's own design and performance is comparable. It comes MFi-certified by Apple.

More than 50% cheaper than Apple’s, and it works in exactly the same fashion. But because it is Amazon selling it, and not Apple, you pay less. Available in either black and white, the AmazonBasic’s Apple Certified Lightning Cable is fully kitted out for use with iPhone and iPad
- Know Your Mobile
One of the cheapest MFi-certified Lightning cables you can buy. Comes in two colors (black and white), four lengths (4 inches, 3 feet, 6 feet, and 10 feet), and costs between $6 (for the 4-inch cable) and $12 (for the 10-foot cable). The 3-foot cable costs $6.49, one of the...
- Macworld
We tested a white cable in our day-to-day, and found it nearly the same as Apple’s official cable. The reason you’ll go for the AmazonBasics cable is if you’re looking to save a few bucks over the proprietary options without sacrificing any performance. What you’re really buying here is decent...
- Lifewire
The cheapest cord on our list, but it's still excellent. Unlike most cheap lightning cables, you can count on the AmazonBasics cable to work with your iPhone or iPad, because it's MFi certified by Apple. That's rare for cheap cables, and it's incredibly important — uncertified third-party cables can be...
- Business Insider
Perfect for portable batteries, charging stations, or for use in the car. Like all accessories made by the retail giant, the cable has solid build quality and is backed by a 1-year warranty.
- Best Products
With nearly 9,000 five-star reviews, this cable gets top marks for durability. One reviewer even claims that it’s “even stronger and much more durable than the original Apple lightning cable.” Another explains, “This is the only lightning cable I’ve ever used that hasn’t worn down and continues to work. I’ve...
- New York Mag
This basic cable can be purchased in additional lengths, making it a suitable option regardless of where you intend to do your charging.

You can generally trust them to at least be wired properly and not damage your equipment. As Wirecutter contributor Geoff Morrison explained, “A company like Amazon isn’t going to put out something that doesn’t work. It’d be too expensive and damaging to the brand.”
- The New York Times
This Amazon Lightning is the best and fast charging USB cable on the market. The Lightning connector head works with virtually all cases. This cable ensures complete charge and also sync data completely with your Apple device. The Lightning adapter is made in such a way that it can fit...
- IfNotTech
Products in the AmazonBasics range just work and they’re very cheap to boot. Cheap does not mean bad though – Basics’ 0.9m (3ft) cable is under a fiver, with free delivery. So you can buy three cables for around the price of one Apple version if you don’t mind not...

What other experts didn't like

It’s just a little lighter, thinner, and cheaper-feeling than Apple’s cable, and it doesn’t hold up very well to lots of daily neck stress or rogue chair wheels (though Amazon says it’s been strengthened to improve durability and reduce fraying, and that it’s been tested to bend 95 degrees at...
- Macworld
Overly simplistic package. Unexciting design. Cheap material. Because this cable is designed and built out of the standard layer of rubber, you won’t get any levels of unusually high strength, like you’d get from the other third-party cables that promise “unbreakable” status.
- Lifewire
It only comes in black or white.
- Business Insider
About as no-frills as you can get. Sure, you might be tempting fate with an inexpensive cable made from materials that typically degrade with extended use.
- Reviewed
Amazon does note that it works with ‘nearly all cases’, so you may want to double check, but we doubt this would be a problem for most accessories.

Our IPhone Charger Cord Buying Guide

If you’re an avid iPhone user, you don’t have to sold on its uses. These pocket-sized supercomputers can shoot video, play games, give you directions and even make actual phone calls. Still, they’re all paperweights without power.

That’s why a good charging cord is just as vital as the iPhone itself. And while there’s still only one connector that will charge your smartphone, there’s still some variety in your options.

For new iPhone users, the most crucial thing is to make sure you’re buying the right charger. As of their latest version, iPhones and many iPads all use charging cords in a format called the Lightning cable. The Lightning cable was introduced in 2012 and has been the standard for most Apple products since the iPhone 5. The exceptions here are the iPod which uses a 30-pin connector and the newest iPad Pro, which charges up via a USB-C.

Lightning cables relatively easy to recognize compared to USB cables or other chargers. They are small and thin at the connection point, with 8 pins that are not only a conduit for power but data. They’re reversible, which means there is no way to plug them in “upside-down.” Either end will work. If you’re using them to transfer photos or other data off your phone, the data speeds tend to be around 480 Mbps.

DWYM Fun Fact

Apple’s Lightning cables got their name because they were the successor to the old Thunderbolt chargers. The name is increasingly inaccurate, though: While Lightning cables charge up current Apple phones just fine, they tend to have slower data transfer speeds than the newer USB-C cables — a standard Apple has already begun to adapt for its newest Ipad Pro.

The IPhone Charger Cord Tips and Advice

  • iPhone chargers tend to see a lot of use in a lot of different locations, so consider buying one with some kind of extra protection around the cord. Braided nylon is a good material for this, and you might find cords that even sheath the cable in Kevlar or steel fibers.
  • While Apple is the only company that makes an iPhone, you’ll find plenty of third-party manufacturers churning out iPhone chargers. If quality is a concern, look for an “MFi-certified” designation. That stands for “Made For iPhone,” and such products have been cleared by Apple’s own quality control standards.
