Lane Bryant, the first designer of plus-sized clothes, launched in 1904 with Lena Himmelstein Bryant Malsin at the helm. They started designing maternity fashion so expectant mothers could be comfortable and presentable in the early 1900s. Her accordion pleated skirt and elasticized waistband were a hit among her customers, and this maternity dress was her No. 1 selling clothing item.
Just before WWI, Bryant had another idea and challenge to consider: there were no brands making clothing for women outside of the standard sizes. Bryant measured over 4,500 of her customers and took data from about 200,000 other women to design her first line of plus-sized clothing. By 1923 the brand was solely focusing on plus-size clothing.
