Buying Guide

Having lip balm on hand is essential, especially if you live in an area where the air tends to be on the dry side. You’ve likely seen holders that make it easy to keep your hand sanitizer close by. But what about your ChapStick and lip balm?

A lip balm key chain holder can give you the storage you need to keep your lips moisturized. You can attach these holders to your key chain or slip them on a hook on a purse, zipper fastener or belt loop.

But some lip balm holders are versatile enough to hold a variety of toiletry items. You can use one of these holders for a variety of small items, from lipstick and lip gloss to perfume, travel sunscreen, cotton swabs or makeup remover. They can even extend beyond cosmetics for storing first aid supplies and pepper spray.

Before you purchase a lip balm holder, stop to consider how you’ll want to carry it. Many come with an attached keyring, which can be great, but not as useful for hanging on zipper fasteners and belt loops. Instead, look for one that comes with a carabiner that makes it easy to attach it to a variety of items.

What to Look For

  • Look at the measurements of a lip balm holder and measure it against the item you’ll be attaching it to. It may be larger than you think.
  • Lip balm holders come in a variety of colors and patterns. You can likely find one that matches your bag or clothing items.
  • Most lip balm holders are sold in sets. This makes them ideal for giveaways. But you can also choose one that comes in a set of three, allowing you to attach one to your keyring, backpack and purse. This will allow you to take lip balm, hand sanitizer, lotion or another essential item with you everywhere you go.
  • For a lip balm holder you’ll be taking with you day after day, durability will be essential. Look for one that will be easy to keep clean while also protecting the item stored inside it.
  • Some lip balm holders are marketed as waterproof. This may not be a huge concern, but it can come in handy if you’re ever caught in a storm or drop it in water.
  • If you plan to attach your lip balm holder to your key ring, keep in mind that too many items can weigh your key chain down, which can cause excessive wear on your car’s ignition. With today’s push-button starter switches, this isn’t as much of an issue, but if you have an older vehicle, it’s something to consider.

More to Explore

Lip balm has been around for more than a century now, having been first introduced in the 1890s. Dr. Charles Browne Fleet, a Virginia pharmacist, is credited with inventing ChapStick, although initially, his product didn’t catch on with the buying public. He sold the product on his own until 1912, when he approached his friend, John Morton, with an offer to sell him the formula for his unique lip balm.

Morton purchased the formula for just $5, which was the cost of a suit at the time. Working alongside his wife, Morton began producing the lip balm in his kitchen, packaging it in tubes in a more eye-pleasing manner. The change worked, and soon the couple had to move their production to a nearby factory to meet the demand for ChapStick.
