Whether a professional football player or a weekend runner, you’ll need something to keep sweat dripping down your face. This is where headbands come into play. You’ll see them on display at any tennis match, usually matching the player’s outfit. They’re a great way to keep your head cool and your hair off your forehead.
When choosing your headband, keep a few considerations in mind. The first is how often you’ll be using the accessory. If you’re practicing your basketball skills five days a week, it might be wise to invest in a multi-pack so that you can have a fresh one even when others are in the wash.
You should also make sure that the headband you choose is machine washable. Be sure to always follow the manufacturer’s instructions on properly caring for your headband.
Men’s headbands come in a variety of widths. Some athletes prefer a wide headband covering a large portion of the forehead and hair, while others prefer a more narrow headband. This will come down to personal preferences. You can always fold a piece of cloth to the width you’re considering to see how it feels on your head.

The sweatband, or men’s headband, is over 100 years old! The first sweatband was worn by Fred Perry, the only British tennis player to win a Career Grand Slam.
Perry created the sweatband, and the original wristband, out of medical gauze. He used this gauze to stop the sweat from reaching his face and hands and said it was vital to his success. Soon after he started wearing them, players from all over the world were curious about his invention.
In the late 1940s, Perry was contacted by Tibby Wegner, a former Australian football player, who wanted to collaborate with him to create a new product. At first, Perry wasn’t impressed with Wegner’s design, as it was essentially a folded towel for the head.
After many iterations of the product, the new sweatband was finally produced. Fred Perry’s clothing line was the first to sell them, and now every sports brand has its own version.
