The first was developed in Germany in the 1800s; Prestoff leather was made from tree pulp and treated to bind together in layers; it was widely used during World War II when leather was in limited supply. In 1914, a Naugatuck, Connecticut company invented a rubber-based leather alternative called Naugahyde, and DuPont’s Fabrikoid came along a year later.
Leather leggings have a much longer history. There’s evidence that men wore them in 14th-century Scotland. But in more modern times, the faux leather leggings look became an indelible part of the culture in the late ’70s.
