Ready-to-eat salads and sushi are being recalled for possible listeria contamination

If you recently purchased any ready-to-eat foods, you should check your refrigerator right away. Fuji Food Products, Inc. recently issued a voluntary recall of almost two dozen of its prepared food products sold across the East Coast and upper Midwest due to “product contamination with Listeria monocytogenes,” according to the Food and Drug Administration.

The FDA recall report explains that Listeria is “an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people and others with weakened immune systems. Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea, Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.”

The issue was discovered by a routine FDA inspection in one of Fuji’s Massachusetts factories. The company has since shut down production there in order to find the source of the problem.

The FDA also reported that no illnesses have been reported as a result of the contamination.

Affected products include ready-to-eat salads, sushi and spring rolls sold at retailers in 31 states and Washington, D.C., at stores including Trader Joe’s, 7-Eleven, Walgreens, Food Lion, Hannaford, Giant Eagle, Porky’s, Bozzuto’s, Supreme Lobster and Superior Foods.

All of these products are packed in plastic trays with clear lids and the sell-by dates are on the labels. Consumers who have purchased any of the recalled products should dispose of the product in an appropriate waste container.
