Coco Chanel: The Illustrated World of a Fashion Icon is a compilation of Megan Hess’ stunning illustrations of the 100 most quintessential moments through Chanel’s history, from Coco’s incredible life, to the impact of Karl Lagerfeld and the incredible items that have become fashion icons – the little black dress, the luxurious bags and accessories, glamorous jewellery and of course the renowned Chanel No 5 perfume. Interspersed with historical anecdotes and famous quotes from Coco herself, Karl Lagerfeld and other key fashion icons of the era, this book is an elegant and immersive introduction to the moments that shaped Coco and the iconic Chanel brand – and how fashion, in turn, shaped their lives.

What reviewers didn't like

There are no surprises here and anyone who has seen the 2009 Audrey Tatou film Coco Before Chanel will be familiar with much of the material presented here.
To say that this is a loosely told story is an understatement. For anyone who has ever read even a few of those 20 books it is readily apparent that the facts are told in a highly selective manner. If one wants to write a book about anyone who has been heavily exposed, then it is one’s responsibility to get the facts straight. Even though this book is told in a lighthearted and supposedly witty manner, that is no excuse to rewrite history or embroider it to suit one’s needs.
A lot of the writing was sub-par and repetitive. It kind of bothered me that they mostly skated over Coco Chanel's sketchy Nazi connections.
