An Overview On Kids Ski Helmets

Being able to enjoy the winter weather with your little ones is the ultimate way to spend a snowy day. If you’re an avid skier, you’ll want to teach your child how to navigate the slopes. The most important thing to keep in mind is safety. Be sure to look for a kids’ ski helmet that you can trust.

According to Stephanie Mansour, certified personal trainer and health and wellness expert, “Ski helmets not only provide protection, but they also provide warmth on the slopes.”

Not only do you want to ensure your little ones are safe, you also want them to be toasty warm while skiing.

Keep in mind that while helmets provide safety, they do not completely remove the risk of an injury.

“There’s always the risk of a concussion or injuries when you’re skiing or snowboarding, especially if you’re going at high speeds and down difficult slopes,” says Mansour. “While the helmet doesn’t guarantee that you’ll be 100% safe, it does significantly reduce the impact to your head if you do fall or land in a compromising position.”

Did you know that there are different types of ski helmets, each offering different benefits to kids? “There are three types of helmets: half shell, full shell, and then full face. The half shell is the most popular, and provides protection for your entire head with soft ear pads,” says Mansour. “Full shell helmets provide more protection around the ears and are meant for more full-speed or competitive skiers.” You always want to ensure that the shell is made out of a very strong material. “The shell is the outer part of the helmet that will make contact during a fall,” reminds Mansour.

Keep in mind that if your little one is in a skiing accident and the helmet is involved in the fall, you will need to replace it before their next trip down the slopes. “If you do fall and hit your head with the helmet, make sure to buy a new one for your next run,” explains Mansour. “Most helmets are intended for single-use if they’re used to break a fall.”

DWYM Fun Fact

While safety always comes first when you’re looking for a new ski helmet for your child, you can also investigate a number of other unique features that add to the whole skiing experience. For many skiers, ventilation is of the utmost importance. Vents are designed to bring cool air in and kick warm air out. They keep the head nice and dry. In addition to the helmet, ski goggles are a must-have piece of skiing equipment. They protect your eyes and keep the glare of the sun away. Make sure that the goggles fit with the helmet and the goggle strap it provides.

For many kids, listening to music while skiing is a way to add an extra layer of fun to the day. Did you know you can actually find kids’ ski helmets that have built-in speakers? Some helmets are built keeping in mind that people will be wearing earbuds. When listening to music, it’s still critical to pay attention to everything around you, so be sure your child understands how to be safe on the slopes while listening to some tunes.

Does your child enjoy watching their own skiing adventures? Then you may want to look into a ski helmet that has a camera mount. This will enable you to attach a portable camera to the top of their helmet so you can record their runs. Afterward, you can enjoy watching their journey together while sipping some hot chocolate.

The Kids Ski Helmet Buying Guide

  • Always buy a helmet that focuses on safety. “Look for a helmet that has a certification, which means it’s been tested and then met requirements and certified,” says Mansour. “Make sure to purchase a make and model that is certified so that you know you’re getting the best quality.” The OutdoorMaster Kids Ski Helmet is ASTM certified. It is equipped with a reinforced ABS shell and has a shock-absorbing EPS core. The Odoland Kids Ski Helmet is ASTM F2024 and CE EN1077 Certificated, plus it’s also FDA approved.
  • Be sure to check out the fit of your child’s ski helmet. The fit not only keeps them comfortable on the slopes, but it ensures their safety. If the helmet doesn’t fit properly, it will not be able to protect them as well during a fall. “When trying on a helmet, make sure that the chin strap is fitted back against the throat and isn’t too loose. Pretend like you’re chewing food — it should fit comfortably enough so that you can chew without feeling uncomfortable,” says Mansour. “You want to make sure that the ski helmet doesn’t feel like it’s pinching you or moving around on your head. The front lid of the helmet should hit just above the eyebrows. The helmet should be snug all the way around your head.” The way to ensure your child’s helmet will fit properly is to look for ones that have multiple adjustability features. That way, you can create a custom fit for their head.
  • The OutdoorMaster Kids Ski Helmet has a size-adjustable dial to ensure you can tighten the helmet in all the right places. The Smith Optics Zoom Kids Ski Helmet also has an adjustable helmet fit system so you can customize the fit to your child’s head. The Giro Launch Kids Ski Helmet has an ergo-friendly dial at the base of the helmet, providing up to six centimeters of adjustability. The Odoland Kids Ski Helmet has adjustable bands for a custom fit, providing an extra layer of comfort.
  • There are many reasons to purchase a solid helmet for your child. “The benefits of purchasing this product are that you’ll be as safe as possible while skiing. You’ll be preventing major injuries to your head with very minimal effort — all you have to do is put the helmet on your head!” says Mansour. “This product can help reduce the effects of concussions, brain injuries, skull fractures, and cuts to the head.” Be sure to consider the quality of the outer shell when making your decision about which helmet to purchase. The Odoland Kids Ski Helmet, for example, is shockproof and penetration resistant. Both the helmet and goggle stay effectively in place, offering protection during a fall or accident.
