This 30-bottle wine refrigerator can be built-in under a kitchen counter, or you can use it as a freestanding unit, giving you plenty of options for placement. It’s got a double-layered tempered glass door that will hold the chill in while you can still see the bottles, and it will never fog from condensation.

This is undoubtedly our most recommended of the wine coolers we’ve found. The combination of price and storage is pretty much unbeatable and you can either build it in or leave it freestanding depending on how you want to do things. This is a compressor model, obviously, so it’s a little bit louder than the thermoelectrics we’ve shown you so far. That said, it holds temperature super well and remembers the temperature so you don’t have to reset it in the event of a power outage. It’s not a countertop model, but you’ll find most people don’t have too much trouble finding a place to fit it in. The extra capacity and fair cost make it excellent for the average wine conisseur.

This Kalamera model was the first I ever encountered that had a memory function when it comes to temperature. Power outages are no longer something to worry about, when it comes to set temperatures on your wine cooler. Thanks to the type of technology used in making the cooler, the vibrations are kept low, resulting in undisturbed wine sediments. Your wine will therefore always retain its freshness without any unpleasant after tastes.

To begin, let’s start off with the Kalamera 15 inch 30 bottle wine fridge – our top pick for the best built-in (under counter) wine fridge. The great thing about this wine fridge is that it can be either a freestanding fridge or a built-in one. You get to choose. Also, it has 30 bottle capacity, allowing you to store in 30 bottles at one time. That is a pretty impressive bottle capacity to have for most wine collectors. To make it even better, this wine fridge has a temperature memory function, allowing the fridge to remember the temperature it had during the last time it was on. That’s a very useful feature for when you suffer a power outage.

Kalamera is one of the best under counter wine cooler models. Because this model cools through a compression system, and thus does not require much air circulation, we recommend integrating this into a cabinet. It also has a lock to prevent minors or young children from opening the cooler. The Kalamera 15 Inch Cooler can hold up to 30 regular size wine bottles lying flat on its shelves, but you can also reconfigure the lower shelves for larger bottles. Inside, this model maintains a temperature between 40 and 60 degrees Fahrenheit, so you can set it accordingly for reds or whites.

As an advanced wine cooler, its built-in LCD temperature display enables you to tune the temperature to your favorite degree in a range of 40~66°F. What I like most about this unit is that it is extremely flexible in terms of where you place it. Unlike some of the other built-in units, it features a finished top and sides. This means that if, like my friend, you ever decide that you want to make this a freestanding unit (and maybe gain some extra cupboard space in your kitchen or bar) you can slide it out and set it anywhere you like without it sticking out like a sore thumb. One look at this cooler tells you that it is perfect for any contemporary space. It will nicely match with other stainless steel appliances. I will let its overall appearance speak for itself through the picture I will add to this page, though, since I would rather spend our time together discussing its various features. After all, there is much more to this cooler than simply its ability to be used as a built-in or freestanding unit!

The Kalamera 30 bottle Wine refrigerator is designed with ease of use in mind. The unit has very few parts to assemble and it comes with a handy menu that explains everything about installation and use. The temperature display and control panel are easily discernible and labelled in clear language. This wine cooler is sturdily designed, with few complaints of parts coming off or breaking down in the early stages of use. Where there have been issues, affected customers talk of speedy and efficient response from Kalamera customer service. The Kalamera 30 bottle Wine refrigerator is an exceptionally beautiful product. Despite coming at a relatively low cost, the design of this fridge makes it look like a much more premium product.

What experts didn't like

One drawback of this model is that it uses a compressor to cool your wines, which uses more energy than thermoelectric coolers and isn’t as quiet while running. It is about as loud as a kitchen fridge, which also generally use a compressor. It also costs more than most other wine coolers in our comparison – more than double actually.

Despite being advertised as a 30-bottle unit, the Kalamera 30 bottle Wine refrigerator has a hard time taking that number without a bit of coaxing and squeezing. This is even more problematic with larger wine bottles. However, rearranging the shelves does make for more efficient space use and a wide variety of wine bottles can be stored. There are some marked disparities between the set temperature and the actual temperature, as much as by 7 degrees according to some reviews. This is a very common problem with many kinds of refrigerators and is not isolated to the Kalamera 30 bottle Wine refrigerator.

An Overview On Wine Coolers

If you love wine, you need somewhere to put it — but not everyone has the room, the budget or the need for a true wine cellar. Enter the wine cooler.

“Wine coolers can also provide that perfect temperature for storing and aging wines at a fraction of the cost of building a wine cellar in your home,” says our resident culinary expert Julie Chernoff, a member of Les Dames d’Escoffier, dining editor for Better magazine and food journalist.

Wine coolers can be conveniently located wherever they are needed, but it can be difficult to choose one. They come in a wide price range and with many potential bells and whistles. So, as you’re shopping for one of these useful refrigerators, consider what basic capacity and bottom-line utility you need your wine cooler to have. Also, where will you put it and what size or look fits with your decor? Some common considerations include temperature range and stability, humidity level and the amount of noise the unit makes.

“There are myriad capacities to suit your particular needs, from countertop versions to under-the-counter wine fridges,” Chernoff explains. “The most useful wine coolers provide the ability to adjust temperature and humidity, have adjustable racks to accommodate thicker champagne bottles, dual-zone control to accommodate both red and white wines, and run quietly and efficiently.”

The next step is to look at what extra features you desire. Some coolers come with alarms, LED lighting and particular rack materials to enhance your wine experience.

“A tempered glass-front door provides a way to see what’s in stock without constantly opening and closing the door and letting the cold air out,” Chernoff advises. “It also ensures that you won’t forget the bottles in the back of your pantry.”

If you’re serious about your wine, a wine cooler can upgrade your storage immensely and provide the right climate for your favorite vintages.

The Wine Cooler Buying Guide

  • Decide where your wine cooler will live. Before picking a spot, consider where there’s enough space within your home to keep it and how convenient you need your wines to be. Size may be a limiting factor, so keep that in mind. Should you get something that is free-standing or one that fits on your counter?
  • You may wish to purchase a wine cooler that fits your decor. Check out your options when it comes to appearance.
  • Consider the cooling method. Wine coolers can run on a compressor just like a refrigerator, but some smaller ones are thermoelectric. Thermoelectric units are quiet and efficient, but need extra clearance space and may not work as well if the air around them is warm. Compressors are heavier and a bit louder, but may last longer.
  • How much capacity do you need? Do you like to regularly keep several options on hand?  Will you be storing bulkier items, like champagne bottles? If any of these factors apply to you, you may need a cooler with adjustable racks.
  • Temperature regulation is one of the most important factors to consider when buying a wine cooler. Find a unit that has an adjustable thermometer, and consider dual zones if you’ll be putting both white and red wines in your cooler.
  • Price is also important. Many wine coolers have nice features, so decide what extras you can live without if you want something on the lower end of the price range.
