What experts liked

The first thing I noticed about Gobble was just how much fresh produce I received in my order. For the beautiful Italian flat iron steak meal, which is supposedly two servings, I got a huge bag of ripe cherry tomatoes and an entire bundle of green onions. Even though this meal’s side was a creamy polenta, I could have just as well made a side salad of marinated tomatoes with the leftovers. For my miso-baked salmon, I got a giant bag of fresh broccoli and a ton of jasmine rice. During the unboxing alone, it was evident that Gobble values quantity and quality.
Takes the template from the old guard of meal delivery kits but speeds it up by prechopping and part-cooking many of the components so that all recipes have a prep time of 15 minutes or less. Despite the "fast food" angle, each menu from this food kit delivery service has a sophisticated and worldly vibe.

We love that Gobble includes specialty menu options for people who are gluten-free, dairy-free, low-carb, and vegetarian, and emphasizes kid-friendly options for families. Sample meals: seared salmon with kale, Mexican squash flatbread with cotija cheese, and Chinese five-spice tofu with lime coconut vegetable stew.

Gobble’s chefs are all about doing the prep work for you so you don’t have to spend time peeling, chopping, or marinating. There’s also room for customization to every kind of diet, preference, and kid with discriminating taste—including gluten-free, dairy-free, low-carb, and vegetarian.
If you’re looking for a meal kit that can go from box to plate in about 15 minutes, Gobble might just be the one for you. The dishes all turned out tasty, and the easiest—the Veracruz stew—was the best. With castelvetrano olives, marinated artichoke hearts, tomato-based sauce, and garlic-and-shallot confit, it was bursting with flavor.
Instead of making your own sauce, Gobble sends you a premade sauce. Instead of cooking rice, Gobble sends you parboiled rice that takes a minute to microwave. Instead of chopping broccoli, Gobble sends you a bag of prechopped broccoli.
Nearly every ingredient comes prepared, whether that means already-shredded cheese or pre-peeled carrots. With minimal prep, you can toss everything together and get dinner on the table in about 20 minutes. The basic instructions and simple meals are great for beginners, and I also appreciate the pre-measured liquids. It's nice to just dump in a bottle of sesame oil versus tracking down the right measuring spoon (and washing another dish).

Gobble's main differentiator is its focus on meals you can whip up quickly, often in as little as 15 minutes. You're unlikely to use more than two pans in the process.
The cooking process was very straightforward and simple. Gobble broke it down into just three steps, so it was easy to follow along. We loved how the chicken was pre-cut. We were able to drop it directly into the skillet, rather than having to dirty a cutting board and knife with raw meat juices (those are the worst).

Another thing to note was the smaller, more compact recipe cards. While they are so much easier to save and store in a kitchen drawer than full-sized pieces of paper, they are also a bit more cramped in terms of directions and information. I couldn’t find an estimated cook or prep time like on other company’s cards, and the cooking directions were a bit complicated looking as they follow a more crowded paragraph format.
But that convenience comes at a price. Gobble is about $2 to $3 more per serving than most other services, plus shipping isn’t free. The recipe cards are handy but their design is flawed. They’re much smaller than most other services we’ve tried and the type is a bit cramped and small. You might need your reading glasses to follow them.
Can't see complete recipe until after payment; info only available in a PDF. Can't see full list of ingredients until after payment. Its web interface could use some work, and it could do a better job reducing plastics used in packaging.
Servings are $11.99 each. That’s a bit higher than companies like HelloFresh or Sun Basket, so you do end up paying for the faster cooking speed. There’s a lot of plastic waste.

Overview

Takeout can be expensive, but cooking every meal at home quickly gets old. In recent years, a fun alternative to both options has popped up. Meal delivery kits are more expensive than buying the ingredients yourself but less expensive than takeout from your favorite restaurants. Some newer meal delivery kits are even as cheap as fast food.

But there’s no shortage of meal delivery kit services. There are so many, in fact, that it can be tough to choose just one. It’s important to know the different types of meal kit services so that you can narrow it down to those that interest you most.

Meal kits can be very convenient. Some services specialize in easy prep time. Kits with microwavable meals can be perfect for busy families. There are some that arrive with ingredients already chopped, saving you prep time. If you prefer the oven to the microwave, you can even find kits with meals that just have you piling everything into a provided pan and sticking it in the oven.

If you’re on a special diet, there are plenty of meal kits with plans for vegan, keto and calorie-conscious people. Some also offer help with food sensitivities, while others are perfect for the meat lover, even giving you the option of ordering double portions.
