Taking fish oil supplements for six months can reduce your risk of major cardiac events (like heart attacks), and they might help lower your blood pressure. Fish oil can also reduce inflammation and pain in patients with rheumatoid arthritis.

Fish oil supplements contain a combination of DHA and EPA, two essential Omega-3 fatty acids. They work in tandem to keep your body’s cells happily humming along. The Center for Disease Control recommends consuming about 1 gram to 1.5 grams of Omega-3s every day. It’s hard to reach that amount from food alone, so supplements are a must.

“Around 30% of fish oil is made up of omega-3s, while the remaining 70% is made up of other fats,” says Dr. Niket Sonpal, a physician in New York City. “What’s more, fish oil usually contains some vitamin A and D.”

Most fish oil supplements come in capsule form. (You can also buy liquid fish oil supplements, but they’re a tough sell if you aren’t a fan of fishy flavors.) They contain enough DHA and EPA to meet your daily requirements, but you’ll need to take two or three capsules per day to meet that goal. Many of these capsules add a little bit of flavoring or add coatings to the capsule shell to prevent “fish burps,” a common side effect.

Sonpal also recommends looking for a fish oil supplement that has a sustainability certification, such as from the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) or the Environmental Defense Fund.

Incorporating more fish into your diet has heaps of health benefits — just make sure you don’t overdo it. In 2009, actor Jeremy Piven (best known for his role as Ari Gold in “Entourage”) dropped out of the Broadway revival of David Mamet’s “Speed the Plow” due to mercury toxicity. 

Plenty of late night talk show hosts joked that Piven made up this unusual diagnosis to get out of a play he didn’t want to perform in, but reports from Piven’s doctors told a different story.

Piven had been eating sushi twice a day for years, leading to dangerously high levels of mercury in his bloodstream. His doctor said that his mercury levels were nearly six times the upper tolerable limit, leaving Piven exhausted and unable to perform. Piven recovered after foregoing sushi for a few weeks and allowing his body to clear out the mercury. 

Fish with high levels of mercury include shark, swordfish, king mackerel and tilefish. Luckily, those fish aren’t the ones used in fish oil supplements, so you won’t need to drop out of a David Mamet revival anytime soon. 

The Fish Oil Buying Guide

  • Fish oil supplements add Omega-3 fats to your diet. The two most common omega-3 fats in fish oil supplements are DHA and EPA. These fats work together to keep your body’s cells happy, especially the cells in your eyes and the ones involved in your cardiovascular system. You should always check with your doctor before adding any supplements to your diet, but some research suggests that fish oil may reduce your risk of heart disease and reduce the painful inflammation associated with certain medical conditions. 
  • The ratio of DHA to EPA varies from one supplement to the next. For example, BioSchwartz Omega-3 Fish Oil Supplement contains 1200 mg of EPA and 900 mg of DHA.
