Expert Reviews

What reviewers liked

Canidae All Life Stages is a plant-based dry dog food using a moderate amount of named meat meals as its main sources of animal protein,
Plus: - Stated ingredients are USDA inspected (no disclosure provided if ingredients are inspected and approved). - The mineral listings read to be chelated or proteinated (for better mineral absorption). - This food contains friendly bacteria (probiotics – benefits the intestinal system and in turn the immune system of the pet); included in Guaranteed Analysis (company guarantees viable bacteria). - Contains alfalfa – health promoting ingredient.
They only use ingredients that are “human grade”, and they never put fillers in their food.We find chicken meal, turkey meal, and then lamb meal as the top three ingredients. This is very impressive, especially considering meal is weighed aftercooking when it’s more concentrated. Dog’s are primarily carnivores, so this is definitely what we want to see.
Fresh lamb is the number one ingredient in this formula. It’s completely grain-free, gluten-free, and without antibiotics, hormones, or fillers. In fact, this formula has only 10 key ingredients to assist with digestion issues in older or food-sensitive dogs. The carbohydrates come from sweet potatoes, peas, and chickpeas. This premium dog food product is ideal for dogs with food sensitivities, given its small ingredient list.
Canidae dog food includes a number of outstanding formulas that customers are largely satisfied with. The Canidae line includes foods for all life stages and a Platinum formula intended for maintenance in older dogs or sedentary dogs.
he first ingredient in the food is chicken meal. Chicken is about 80 percent protein and it’s a good source of Vitamin B6 and Phosphorus, and a very good source of Niacin and Selenium. Since this is chicken meal, it’s had most of the moisture removed, meaning it is a condensed form of the chicken protein and a good source of protein for dog food.
This is another premium formula suitable for dogs of all ages and sizes. This works well for families with more than one dog who only want to purchase one type of dog food.
The Canidae Grain-Free PURE lineup includes nine grain-free formulas made with premium proteins such as duck, wild boar, and fresh lamb. Each of these recipes is made with a limited number of ingredients to reduce the risk for food allergies. There are also three recipes specially formulated for small breed dogs.

What reviewers didn't like

Minus: - Contains Sodium Selenite – potential risk form of selenium. - Contains copper sulfate, supplement recently linked to liver disease.
Most of Canidae’s dog food formulas are formulated for all life stages. Their dog food comes concentrated with different protein sources, including beef, bison, duck, lamb, salmon, and fish meal. However, some dog owners take issue with the fact that there’s an unusually high rice content in some of Canidae’s dog food formulas. The low concentration of vegetable proteins found in those same formulas allows for easier digestion in older or more food-sensitive dogs, so some dog owners are willing to overlook the high rice content.
Customers appreciate the protein content and the low amount of vegetable proteins, which some older or more sensitive dogs have trouble digesting correctly.
flaxseed is also a significant source of phytoestrogen – these are plant-derived substances that mimic some of the effects of estrogen in the body. This can be especially true in females. Without going into the possible effects on humans, many dog breeders have reported that feeding dogs foods that contain flaxseed or flaxseed oil has interfered with conception and gestation. So flaxseed meal is something that should be viewed cautiously, especially if you breed dogs.
This is not a grain-free product, so it’s better suited to dogs without sensitive stomachs. With 24% protein and 14.5% fat, this is a good all-round formula, but not appropriate for very athletic, high-performance, working, or pregnant dogs.
Company has had one recall affecting four products, many recipes contain common proteins and other ingredients that may trigger allergies in some dogs (like chicken, rice, and fish)
