Expert Reviews

What reviewers liked

Setup is simple: just plug it into the wall, then fire up the Alexa app and connect it to Wi-Fi. Then you're good to go.
Once it connected, though, it was flawless. It integrated painlessly with Alexa, had no problems connecting and disconnecting, and it was simple to control with both the Alexa app and via voice controls with an Echo Dot.
It's relatively affordable and a breeze to install.
It's simple to set up and use, and can be controlled with your voice.

What makes the Amazon Smart plug a standout is the Alexa software.
The Amazon Smart Plug is the only Alexa-enabled plug that doesn’t require a separate app for control and firmware updates. It has one of the easiest setups, with just a few clicks and without enabling any skills.
Setup is where the Amazon Smart Plug excels. If you're already using the Alexa app, it could not be easier. That's because it's part of what Amazon calls its Wi-Fi Simple Setup, which lets you connect Amazon devices to your Wi-Fi in a flash.
It lets you remotely control any device connected to the smart plug and create routines with other smart home devices using the Alexa app.
You can add voice control to any outlet with this Amazon smart plug, which is compatible with Alexa. It truly is plug and play, just plug it in, open your Alexa app, and start giving voice commands.
Designed to work with Alexa, so you only need the Alexa app to get it up and running. You'll then be able to remotely control the electronics plugged into the Amazon Smart Plugs, use voice control from Alexa devices, as well as set schedules for routine operation.
Schedules and scenes: You’ll be able to easily control your Amazon Smart Plug-connected devices throughout the day automatically, and multiple at once.
One great thing is that it connects seamlessly to Alexa, since the smart plug is made by the same company—the Alexa app will immediately recognize the smart plug during the setup process and connect it to your home’s Wi-Fi network. From there, it’s instantly ready for voice control. It’s about as convenient as it gets.
The plug uses Amazon Wi-Fi simple setup which is part of their self-proclaimed “frustration-free setup” program. This means that if you have an existing Echo device (2nd generation or higher) connected to your wireless network, all you have to do is plug it in and ask Alexa to discover new devices.
The plug is super easy to set up using step by step wizard. Anyone familiar with the Alexa app. If you have bought into the Amazon Echo system, then this may be a good option for you.
It is easy to setup.
Compact design allowing for two to be plugged into the same duplex outlet.
Quick to set up and easy to use.
The app allows for easy scheduling of devices, or remotely turning devices on and off, as long as the outlet is paired with your Alexa app, you can control it without an Echo nearby and even from the beach when you're on vacation!
No smart home hub required.

What reviewers didn't like

It will not work with Google Assistant or any other smart ecosystem. We had a difficult time getting it going, even though it doesn't need a third-party app—Alexa just didn't recognize the plug the first time and we had to try again.
Doesn't work with Apple HomeKit or Google Assistant. No IFTTT support.
It only works through the Alexa app on your phone, so it's really only the best smart plug if you rely on Amazon kit – it doesn't have quite as many features and functions as you'll find on the other smart plugs

Does not work with Google Assistant. While companies like IFTTT and smart people will try to make it happen, it might not ever work with Google Assistant. This is a pretty major issue, one that may negate all the glowing praise I've heaped upon this thing.
Alexa-only, so you won't be able to use it with your Google Home or Apple HomePod. We should also note that it's an indoor-only plug, and it doesn't come with surge protection.
Voice control is restricted to Alexa and we did find it was fiddly to set schedules to turn the smart plug on and off automatically.
Won't be compatible with Google Home voice control.
Energy monitoring: You won’t be able to see how much energy your devices are using through the Alexa app.
For those who use Google Home, Apple HomeKit, Samsung SmartThings, Stringify, or even IFTTT, you’re out of luck. There is simply no compatibility available.
Does not do energy monitoring.
Has issues with Google Assistant.
Locked into the Alexa Ecosystem.
Not compatible with hubs (control units) of other manufacturers.
The plug itself only works on the 2.4 GHz wifi band, while Alexa does work on 5G WiFi, the outlet does not. Something likely to get addressed in future iterations of the device.
No Google Assistant integration.
