The answer depends on where you live—of course, it’s no surprise that you need to make a lot more money to be wealthy in New York than in Arkansas.
The Economic Policy Institute did some digging to find out just how much you’d have to earn to be considered part of the top 1 percent of earners in your state. Nationally, you need to earn $389,436 a year, before taxes, to be considered in the top 1 percent of earners in the United States.
Here’s the state-by-state breakdown of how much income you need to earn to be part of the top 1 percent of earners in your state (the map above rounds up). And just in case you were curious, we threw in the amount you’d have to earn to be in the top .01 percent—try not to faint.
