DWYM Fun Fact
The American iteration of Mother’s Day — a holiday celebrating motherhood in various forms throughout the world — was created by Anna Jarvis in the early 1900s. Prior to the Civil War, Jarvis’ mother, Anna Reeves Jarvis, helped establish “Mother’s Day work clubs” to teach local women how to care for their children.
After her mother’s death in 1905, Anna Jarvis came up with Mother’s Day as a way to honor sacrifices mothers made for their children and lobbied for the day to become a United States holiday. Her hard work paid off in 1914, when President Woodrow Wilson signed a measure making Mother’s Day every second Sunday in May — but she became disgusted by the holiday’s commercialization and started a campaign against florists, greeting card companies, and other profiteers that capitalized on its popularity.
The Gift For Mom Tips and Advice
- Back massagers are great gifts for moms who spend a lot of time on their feet or suffer from muscle aches.
- For a gift that will bring your mom joy for years to come, opt for something sentimental or customizable such as a picture frame or book.
- If your mom struggles with or is hesitant to accept new technology (for example, she is happy with her landline phone), a smart device may not be the best gift.
