Walmart is partnering with thredUP to get into the fashion resale market

If you’re into resale shopping when it comes to your wardrobe, you’re about to get a brand new way to find bargains — and it’s all thanks to a store you already know.

While there’s no denying you can already find bargains at Walmart, the retailer now also has a partnership with thredUP, a re-commerce platform for fashion and accessories at mass-market prices.

Customers can now shop a special section of Walmart’s website to find nearly 750,000 pre-owned items including women’s and children’s clothing, accessories, footwear and handbags.


According to a press release, items available for sale have been evaluated and selected by thredUP based on their overall quality and condition. For one, only pre-owned clothing and shoes deemed “new” or “like new” by the company will be on sale. Accessories and handbags, meanwhile, will have a bit more leeway, as some of those items will be “gently used.”

When you buy thredUP items from Walmart, you’ll get free shipping on orders of $35 or more and free returns to Walmart stores or via thredUp.


“We are excited to join forces with Walmart to power a sustainable, secondhand shopping experience unlike any other,” Jenn Volk, director of product management, thredUP, said in a press release. “From Calvin Klein and Nike to Coach and Michael Kors, this digital partnership enhances Walmart’s fashion offering with fresh brands at amazing prices that their customers will love.”

A quick look at Walmart’s website shows thousands of items already for sale — everything from shoes and scarves to fancy dresses, jewelry and kids’ clothing.


In thredUp’s 2019 Annual Resale Report, GlobalData projected that the total secondhand apparel market would reach $51 billion by 2023 and, according to their upcoming 2020 Annual Resale Report, 70% of consumers have bought or are now willing to buy secondhand.
