Expert Reviews

What reviewers liked

We haven’t formally tested stain removers, but Wirecutter staffers have found Zout Spray Stain Remover to be very effective. It contains protease (an enzyme that breaks down protein stains from cream and milk) and amylase (an enzyme that breaks down the starch molecules from sugar).
The triple enzyme foam formula is effective on even the toughest food stains, such as BBQ sauce, chocolate syrup, tomato sauce, and baby food. You can also use it on other stains, such as grass, blood, and dirt.
A powerful combination of three stain-fighting enzymes—one for grease stains, one for starch stains like tomatoes, and a third for protein stains like blood and sweat—Zout is the go-to stain spray whenever heavy-duty stains happen.
Uses enzymes to break down stains and works particularly well on food-based stains.
Amylase handles the starches from your lunch; protease tackles the proteins in milk, blood, and grass; and lipase takes care of grease.
The trigger spray bottle makes it easy to use prewash and remove all the tough stains from the clothes.
An enzyme-heavy laundry pre-treatment product, like Zout, is also recommended, as the enzymes will help to break down a protein stain (fecal matter falls into the protein stain category).
It works on many fabrics, is color safe and made in the U.S.A.
If the sneakers have significant staining from dirt or grass, both of which are protein stains, give the shoe a liberal spray with a laundry pretreatment product like Zout or Krud Kutter Sports Stain Remover before washing.
Sure, it uses some of the same surfactants that other laundry sprays may use, but it then takes it a step further by adding specialized enzymes to their formula. These enzymes can break down ordinary stains such as ground-in dirt, coffee, and/or grass, but it’s also capable of eliminating tough proteins such as blood.
These enzymes are specialized in breaking down stains, so the stains can be easily removed when you wash the clothing.
Especially designed for protein-based stains, this magic potion contains three enzymes that really cover all of your stain bases from tomato sauce, to grass, even sweat.

What reviewers didn't like

It was surprising that the Zout – Triple Enzyme Formula couldn’t remove the chocolate stain as well as OxiClean despite being manufactured to knock out proteins.
Spray bottle has inconsistent reliability.
Not effective on carpets.
