What experts liked
The audio elsewhere is typically brilliant, from the pops and farts and belches of engines running rich to the wheel noise and kick-up as you careen over all the different surfaces, though I did crank the latter up a bit from its default level.

The sounds are wonderfully varied, leavened with backfires and aspirations and barking or hissing tires perfectly matched to their surfaces.

At least the racing model used for Rally 2.0 is stellar. There is an exceptionally accurate physics model going on that puts a lot of modern racers to shame.

The game plays good out of the box. I like to just get on with things when it comes to racing games.

There’s a nice variation of assists that you can toggle through too, giving you some useful aid if the game’s base hardcore settings are proving too much.

Also on the plus side, there is a healthy amount of vehicles available, and each has distinct handling. I did have an easier time with some vehicles, even using the wheel, and I could appreciate the varied feedback in the controller and wheel.

What is welcome however, is DiRT Rally 2.0’s stunning presentation.

If you enjoyed the realism and satisfaction of a pure simulation type experience in the original DiRT Rally, then DiRT Rally 2.0 is a game you’ll love.

The primary gameplay mode in DiRT Rally 2.0 is the career mode, and it's here that the game truly shines.
- Screen Rant

It helps that cars control and handle incredibly well. Handling feels precise and tight, while cars respond to throttle and breaks with appropriate power or resistance as the situation calls.

Of course, more important that a racing game’s presentation is its performance, and luckily DiRT Rally 2.0 offers a rock solid performance during races with very few exceptions.

We found that the historic mode was the most enjoyable, as it gives a detailed glimpse into the history behind rally racing.
- Game Rant
Excellent rally driving, where each and every car reacts differently

All cars are faithfully reproduced in impressive detail and are accompanied by an authentic audio package giving you a great idea of what it would be like to drive these machines for real. That said, key environmental sounds appear missing.
- Team VVV

Loud, ferociously throaty engines ensure DiRT Rally 2.0 sounds totally authentic, while your co-driver dispensing pace notes will keep you on your toes. Music is restricted to menus, and it's nice enough.

There is some excellent scenery, if you can take your eyes off the gorgeous track surface. The various sounds coming from vehicles are first class.

The career mode consists of events, be they single tracks or tournaments, in both rally and rallycross – its shorter, sprint style cousin

As you can’t go and win everything outright, you learn to appreciate little things, like driving a checkpoint under a control time. It feels great to gain your first career points even if you don’t hit a jackpot right away – and it would be difficult to do so with the untuned default cars of the garage.
- Dark Station

Progress in the level of immersion, thanks to tiny touches like driving beyond the finish line to the steward after each stage.

DIRT RALLY 2.0 provides an authentic off-road racing experience in a vein similar to the original Dirt Rally.
- Common Sense Media
I was so impressed with my first impressions of Dirt Rally 2.0, especially how beautifully made it was – from the menus, to music, graphics and sound.
- Pennyworth Reviews
Content-wise it’s a similarly proportioned package to the first Dirt Rally, with six rally locations, a variety of lengthy stages in each, all of which can be positively saturated with rain or shrouded in darkness
- Top Gear

Of course, another thing you’ll want to spend your hard-earned money on is new cars. There’s a new batch of vehicles available every few hours. You can pick up used cars or brand-new ones.
- Xbox Enthusiasts

If that sounds like hyperbole, trust me, it is not, as the challenge that is presented is real. The game forces you to have complete focus at all times while racing, and the slightest mistakes can either be instantly terminal or cause issues throughout the championship that will produce less than desirable results.

When it comes to cars, DiRT Rally 2.0 definitely doesn’t disappoint. There are 50 at launch, including all your favorites and a few surprises like a Ford Mustang GT4, Aston Martin V8 Vantage, and if you pre-ordered the game, a Porsche 911 RGT.
- Motor 1
February 27, 2019 | Full review
The developer has clearly done its homework when it comes to the stages. Choose your tyres – wet, soft, medium or hard – carefully. No game has ever harnessed such an in-depth knowledge of terrain, probably, and it shows just how passionate the people at Codies are when it comes to motor sport.

Oooooooooh baby, do I love me some DiRT Rally 2.0. There’s certainly an argument to be made that it’s not leaps and bounds ahead of the first game, but I think that’s more a product of the genre.
- Wolf's Gaming Blog

New for Dirt Rally 2.0 is something called ‘Track Degradation’ and in its simple terms means that the more cars that race on a stage before you, the more the track will get cut up and in turn mean that it’s harder to handle your car on with a more slippery surface and less grip in certain areas
- Next Gen Base

What experts didn't like
If Dirt Rally 2.0 has any shortcomings, a big one is the spare lineup of environments (just six) and stages to run (12 per environment).
- Polygon

I might not be so salty about this lack of content if Codemasters wasn't openly marketing a "Deluxe" version of DiRT Rally 2.0 that includes two seasons worth of content.
- Destructoid

Further to that, you’ll constantly be penalized for cutting corners (and rightly so), but this feels massively unfair when you’re forced off-track due to an aggressive opponent, and get a penalty when you’re trying to correct your indirect mistake.

A half-decent list with a smattering of tasks based around specific cars and stages. For the most part, however, this is about grinding out wins and other feats during races, many of which won't come easy.

The capable, but bland, multiplayer lacks ghost cars, staggered starts and anything above the basics. The server list occasionally bugged out and required a full restart.

As the game aims for smooth 60fps, it means the graphics are a bit blurry on a stock Xbox One during races.

The only area it feels lacking in beyond that tepid AI is licensing—that Rallycross deal’s great and everything, but never has a game more richly deserved the WRC license than this one.
- PC Gamer
February 18, 2019 | Full review
This is a complicated yet fun racing game that slowly builds players' confidence in their driving ability. Dirt Rally 2.0 is bound to frustrate many players early on as they find themselves careening over cliffs, getting spun around by rocks jutting into the road, and losing traction due to small changes in road elevation.
- Common Sense Media
The only other niggle I had with the game was that I experienced a few visual glitches.
- Xbox Enthusiasts
February 18, 2019 | Full review
It seems odd to mention depth being an issue when you have the FIA RallyCross Championships, team building, weekly challenges and so many locations to race at, but the game might come across as a bit shallow for fans who are not hardcore rally fans.
- Operation Sports

The scenery feels rather fuzzy during the actual driving and during replays, but curiously, everything tightens up when you pause for a screenshot.
- Motor 1
February 27, 2019 | Full review
The only minor gripe with Dirt Rally 2.0 is the overly simplified career mode that puts you through the same six locations on each playthrough, randomising the stages, and giving you money for podiums and wins that can be put towards car improvements, team improvements and repairs.

Perhaps the biggest complaint that can be levied at the original DiRT Rally is that it isn’t very inclusive.
- Game Spew

One slight negative is the online portion of the game. At the time of reviewing the game, i was unable find a session to join or even when creating an event for others to join, it came back with the same results.

Day One Edition includes the game + 3 DLC Cars (Porsche 911 RGT Rally Spec, Fiat 131 Abarth Rally, Alpine Renault A110 1600 S). The new trailer showcases the breadth of challenge on offer: from piloting legendary rally cars through the fast and flowing mixed surfaces of Poland, to fighting for first place in an FIA World Rallycross Championship supercar, to conquering tricky weather conditions in the Porsche 911 RGT Rally Spec. With new features including improved handling, stage degradation and tire choice, DiRT Rally 2.0 brings the most immersive and truly off-road racing experience ever. DiRT Rally 2.0 is follow-up title to the critically and commercially acclaimed DiRT Rally – which after its hugely successful Early Access program on Steam, launched fully on consoles and PC in April 2016. DiRT Rally 2.0 builds on the challenge thrown down by the original DiRT Rally and delivers the toughest challenge in the DiRT franchise. The combination of enhanced handling with each individual car and improved weather systems, alongside the new track degradation, makes every stage feel completely different. Every corner in every location has its own personality, requiring drivers to remain focused and determined from start to finish. Aim for a clean stage, but failing that just try to get to the end!” – Clive Moody, SVP Product Development – Codemasters
