Left 4 Dead 2 doesn't just add a few new levels and features, it fiddles and increments a formula that few thought needed changing in the first place. The team have managed to infuse their sequel with the exact same kind of nuanced creative energies that usually takes them years, and in doing so they've made last year's accomplished Left 4 Dead look like a simple mod in comparison.
- Metacritic
Fortunately, Left 4 Dead 2's aesthetic, its southern charms, grew on me quickly. The game's better levels offer a horrifying look at the result of mass panic, our four Survivors happening upon a wasteland of deserted cars, downed planes and abandoned homes in the wake of the recently spread infection. The murky southeastern atmosphere, which ranges from dusk 'til dawn, from sun-blinding, hazy days to pitch black nights, adds to the variety of horror. The region-specific tunes, which at first I found almost hokey, have grown on me.

Surprisingly, Left 4 Dead 2 is able to out-gore, out-scare and out-explode the original in just about every way. Instead of a very grey, kinda boring cityscape, you’re running through hotels, swamps, plantations, riverfronts, malls, abandoned highways, amusement parks… we could go on. The diversity is staggering and ultimately makes each movie-like campaign more exciting, tense and memorable than the first game.

With this game, the new zombies are great, it has melee weapons, longer levels awesome 4 player action.

It did almost everything extremely well. Along with hordes of fast-moving "common infected", there were five types of "special infected" the director could deploy to mix things up, and it did. Everyone's favourite was the Witch, a terrifying vision in granny pants, who sat on the floor crying and would incapacitate you if you got in her face, deliberately or otherwise, meaning someone would have to waste time reviving you, probably while other zombies attacked.
- Euro Gamer
The addition of new weapons -- and especially the debut of melee items -- adds a greater level of variety to the action. The locales also feel fresh, taking players through various environments including an abandoned carnival and a shopping mall.

What experts didn't like
Also performing slightly worse than the first is the game's frame rate. It's not problematic in most circumstances, but there are a few times during the campaign that the Xbox 360 version just can't keep up with what's happening on screen—the performance of the PC version is obviously dependent on your hardware and settings. It's most noticeable during the bridge finale in The Parish campaign, but when zombies fill the screen and things get effect-heavy, the game can slow down.

New weapons are not new enough and there are some glitchy moments here and there.

Bots have not really improved, they still cannot pick up explosives and have slow reaction times. Some levels can be lengthy and frustrating if your team wipes and you can get boring after a while.

There are only five campaigns to choose from.

From The Manufacturer

Left 4 Dead 2 is set at roughly the same time as the original - just after the outbreak that turned most of the population into various zombie mutants. Players assume the role of 4 new "Survivors," each with their own personality and new dialog. The game leads these "Survivors" through the southeastern region of the US - from Savannah, Georgia thru the bayou country, and climaxing in New Orleans' French Quarter.
