Expert Reviews

What reviewers liked

Overall, each board did what it was designed to do: go forward, backward and turn with minimal effort. But as we zoomed around our office for a few weeks, a few boards began to stand out: The Segway miniPRO was a universal favorite for its stability, and more experienced boarders praised the Jetson V6 and SwagTron T3 for their fluid movement.
UL-certified battery means it is a safe choice. If you are new to hoverboards, this is a great one to get.
If you’re looking for the best combination of price and performance, the Swagtron T1 hoverboard is the solid choice for buyers. As one of the first hoverboards to receive Underwriter Laboratories certification for safety (UL 2272), the Swagtron T1 immediately stands out with a strong safety record. Built with an ABS outer covering that is both durable and fire-resistant, the SentryShield helps manage the battery system to avoid overheating. Beyond battery safety, the T1 adds a 250-watt motor allowing it to handle up to 30-degree inclines, a range of up to 12 miles and speeds up to 8 miles per hour.
The SwagTron T1 looks a lot like the Swagway X1, our previous (now discontinued) top pick, but it was one of the first hoverboards to be tested and certified by UL. This means that the electrical drive, battery, and charging systems have been deemed safe. After frequent reports of fires and other battery-related issues, this is an important distinction and—since the CPSC’s mass hoverboard recall in 2016—a requirement for our consideration. Of the dozens of hoverboards that are now certified, the SwagTron T1 is the one that could always be easily purchased in the United States, and it’s also one of the most affordable.
With a 220lb capacity, any child will be able to enjoy this with ease; the lower your weight and higher the capacity, the better handling you’ll have.
SwagTron’s popular T580 model only has dual 150W motors, when most boards have at least 250W. This would make SwagTron difficult to use for commutes. However, you may want to try different models like the SwagTron T6 Off-Road, which can handle over 380 lbs and can go on all types of terrain. The 10-inch rugged tires make it a great option for those who want a tough board. It also has a 12-mile range and can go up to 12 mph. This model is a bit more expensive, ranging up to $450. Overall, SwagTron creates boards for all types of riders and lifestyles. Whether you are an adult looking for a commuter board or want a fun board for your kid, most of SwagTron’s boards also come with Bluetooth and app controls.

What reviewers didn't like

Swagtron, one of the most popular brands, has several board options that are certified safe, but the differences between the X1 and X2, as well as the T1, T3, and T5, are difficult to discern. A little transparency goes a long way when considering products with safety concerns.
Only rated to 220 pounds.
Before you get too excited, we’ll warn you now—there’s a shorter-than-average battery life, usually up to about one hour, so you can expect some irritation when your kids continuously ask about “is it charged yet?”
