What experts liked
Numerous quality-of-life improvements, both technical and superficial.

That Super Smash Bros. Ultimate exists is amazing in itself. Circumnavigating the mess that is licensing issues to bring a fighter where not only can those four characters – and the rest of the game’s 71-strong roster – feel fun to play, but they’re all handled in a deeply respectful way to the character’s original properties.

It has several controller options.
- Digital Trends
Local multiplayer is a blast. The game’s main local multiplayer mode, Smash, is of course returning in Ultimate as well. As always, it’s here that you can go toe-to-toe with friends in local multiplayer, which is hands down the best way to play this game.

And so it's not just the improbability of the match-ups that makes Smash Bros so appealing, but more their integrity. That integrity is key to healthy competitive scene, of course, and so much of Ultimate seems to have been built with that in mind.
- Euro Gamer
Tons of unlockable content.

This is the biggest Super Smash Bros. roster yet. In fact, it might be the biggest fighting game roster ever (not counting homebrew Mugen games). Every character that was ever playable in a Super Smash Bros. game can be found here, along with some new fighters.
- PC Magazine
The roster is massive, featuring every previous character from a Super Smash Bros. game, plus some new entries. Some characters that fans have been asking for since Melee have finally made their debut, like King K. Rool from Donkey Kong Country, as well as the menacing space pirate Ridley.
- Game Rant
For players wanting a single player experience that isn’t just normal smash matches, Super Smash Bros Ultimate has plenty.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate feels like a mic drop for the series. It packs in almost every conceivable character and stage, plus a sizable single-player mode.

Difficult to follow the action in Switch's handheld mode.

The whole Spirits thing is confusing.

We used Wi-Fi rather than a LAN adapter and ran into a few hitching and disconnecting issues, as well as trouble getting our matchmaking preferences to consistently be honored.
- Digital Trends
Online modes leave a lot to be desired and need work.

Then there's online, traditionally one of the series' weak spots, which seems - from a morning's play - improved from the Wii U iteration, though does remain dependent on a decent connection. I've played through a handful of full-on four player matches with no problems, but then stepped away from the router and suffered an unplayable sludge of an encounter.
- Euro Gamer
Spirits mode is boring.

Lacks proper online ranking tiers. No online tournament mode.
- PC Magazine
The online was notoriously laggy on day one, to the point that it was basically unplayable in many cases. While things have improved rather significantly since then, lag is still prevalent enough to make Super Smash Bros. Ultimate‘s online hugely disappointing.
- Game Rant
Playing online there is also noticeable lag, it’s even recommended by Nintendo that Switch owners purchase USB to LAN adapters.

This is all to say that I find Spirits just a bit... boring? I like the idea of trying to make trophies mean something from a gameplay standpoint, but they end up overwhelming the skill-based elements of Smash Bros., which I think is a mistake.
