Expert Reviews

What reviewers liked

Great for beginning, Tons of depth for the hardcore.
Underwater exploration is one of Stormblood's flashy new features, complete with mounts that let you hobnob with the fishes and ninja turtle-like denizens of the deep. It's initially amazing, at least for as long as I can hold my breath here in the real world.
- IGN
A thrilling new chapter to the ongoing Final Fantasty XIV saga. Streamlined job class progression is faster, easier. Red Mage is the bomb.
- Kotaku
There is a vast amount to do, which will please players looking to make a serious commitment to a new MMO.
The changes to the combat system have also been wonderful. Animations have been greatly improved (especially when it comes to making each class feel different), and the removal of attribute points streamlines the leveling process.
It has beautiful graphics.
Part of the game's appeal is how much it doesn't change; Final Fantasy XIV doesn't reinvent the wheel.
Strong balance that makes all classes viable.

What reviewers didn't like

Content bloat can intimidate new players.
Story progress a bit too quickly. New swimming and diving mechanic woefully underutilized. No dancer job.
- Kotaku
A certain amount of grind is, however, inevitable.
The only thing I'm bummed out about is the swimming aspect, which isn't nearly as monumental as flight.
A total lack of direction or instruction. Possibly worst interface and economy in MMO history.
Struggling with leftover baggage from original.
