A nice light sweetness. Stays crunchy in milk. Claims to have 50 percent less fat than the leading granola. Contains a whole bunch of vitamins and minerals. One-fifth of your daily recommended intake of fiber. Snap, Crackle and Pop fighting to the death.

My favorite aspect of this cereal was the clusters - the oats, rice and bran that stick together to form crunchy little clumps. A lot of cereals that contain cluster pieces disappoint.

It wasn’t all that flavorful, but it did leave an unpleasant aftertaste that I didn’t get with any of the other varieties. It was also very drying. I wanted a big glass of milk to wash it down with.

Although the Kellogg brothers are rightfully credited for inventing cereal as we know it today, four decades before Corn Flakes hit the market, Dr. James Caleb Jackson came up with something called “granula.” This cereal was devised as a healthy, easy-to-serve breakfast option for Dr. Jackson’s sanitorium in Danville, New York, and was made using wheat flour and water. This mixture was baked until it hardened, then broken into smaller pieces and baked some more. Before it could be eaten, though, it had to be soaked in milk overnight to soften slightly, although reports state that it never became edible.

  • Added sugar can be a problem with granola. In the future, manufacturers will be required to separate out added sugars on the nutrition label. You’ll see some manufacturers already doing that. Otherwise, you’ll have to look at the list of ingredients to see exactly the type of sugar you’re getting. Ingredients that can up the sugar content include chocolate chips, honey and fruit.
