Expert Reviews

What reviewers liked

Super dependable, great feeling engagement, plenty of reliability.
Around the dual-sided mechanism you'll find a supporting cage that increases the shoe to pedal contact area, making it easier to get pedaling without being clipped in - a great advantage for riders new to this pedal system. It also helps to reduce sole hotspots over long rides.
If you prefer to bring the energy efficiency of clipless pedals to your mountain bike rides, these Shimano pedals are a great option. The pedals were designed with mountain biking in mind, which is why they boast a more open design than other clipless options. The openings along the pedals flush out mud and other debris, keeping your cleats clean and your ride smooth.
Though the new pedals weren’t designed to specifically offer more platform to stand on, if you’ve got very flexible soled riding shoes you might feel a bit less shoe curl using the M530s. Going back to a conventional sized SPD pedal you immediately sense the pedal is harder to locate on entry and more prone to roll. If you’re considering an upgrade or first time buying SPD pedals try the ‘Trail’ M530 in preference to the old M520.

What reviewers didn't like

Could do with a touch more foot support.
The extra alloy in the M530’s Trail ‘wings’ adds 39g per pedal (an M520 weighs 188g).
