From a technical perspective, Spintires is surprisingly robust. Boasting a super smooth framerate and some fairly detailed environments, it’s clear that it’s in the mud-modelling where Saber Interactive have wrought their best work – as the mud deforms, churns and changes shape as all manner of mammoth vehicles tear their way through it.

Still, there’s no denying that Spintires: MudRunner – American Wilds is a unique experience that’s strangely entertaining despite often feeling like hard work. It’s hardcore, perhaps to a fault, but that’s what makes it so interesting. And if you have some like-minded friends, you can also play the game in co-op with them online.

I would have thought American Wilds would have introduced new objectives to complete in its maps, but it’s still the same thing: collect logs and deliver them to a far away location on the map. The challenge mode at least sees improvements to it’s incredibly harsh tasks.

Things look good enough at times, but suddenly movement will hang for a split second, or a piece of shrubbery will become stuck in a passing vehicle, and pass through bodywork in all kinds of impossible ways.

Also – and while it plays quite well – Spintires: MudRunner American Wilds is pretty barebones in presentation. Even branded vehicles won’t wow anyone, with the same said for terrain. Similarly, maps and HUD are dry and sometimes confusing.

As for the gameplay, its hard to tell if I’m just a really horrible driver or the controls are bad or possibly its both. I had a really hard time controlling the trucks in this game.
