What experts liked

Solid construction designed to withstand the elements. Available in the biggest variety of pack sizes.
- Rec Room Pick
These are designed with more perforations which will reduce the amount of drag that you’ll experience during your rallies. Because of the durability, you can expect your games to last longer than with some of the other outdoor pickleball balls. The weight of these balls will give you a better sound on impact and will generally hit their target dead on every time.
- Pickleball Drive
The plastic quality is pretty good. The bouncing response is far better than the regular light balls. Long-lasting nature. Great feedback and the speed of travel is fantastic.
- The Pickle Sports
A welded seam joins the two halves. Injection-molded holes to facilitate true flight. Padded ball coat for good bouncing.
- Racket Lounge
Best for a windy environment. Color is visible in sunshine. Highly durable and consistent. These balls can withstand raising the temperature.
- Pickleball Bay
True Flight Technology: they fly straighter thanks to the heavier weight, even in bad outdoor conditions. Authentic Bounce Technology: a consistent bounce to improve the play and the overall performance. Exceptional seam welding: this offers a resistance to splitting, allowing them to be exceptionally durable. USAPA approved: for sanctioned tournament play.

What experts didn't like

Not approved for USAPA tournament play.
- Rec Room Pick
As with all outdoor pickleballs, you can expect these to go out of round very quickly - meaning that they will split and diminish their ability to hit straight every time. NOT USAPA approved.
- Pickleball Drive
No notable disadvantage except high pricing for small packages.
- The Pickle Sports
The price per ball is high.
- Racket Lounge
Still not approved by USAPA. Bounce is slightly on the higher side.
- Pickleball Bay
No significant downsides.

An Overview On Pickleball Balls

Pickleball was invented back in 1965, when a couple of friends started playing around with ping-pong paddles and perforated plastic balls on a tennis court. It is similar to tennis, but is played with smaller paddles and on a smaller court.

The game has become wildly popular, and there are indoor and outdoor local leagues, plus regional and national championships. There are official rules for play, and regulations that apply to everything from paddle sizes to the pickleballs themselves.

In addition to regulations on ball size and appearance, there are specifications for bounce heights, hardness and the number of holes around the surface. If you plan to play more than casually, you should take these rules into consideration when purchasing a ball.

The Pickleball Ball Buying Guide

  • When shopping for pickleballs, look for ones that meet USAPA standards, which is something that should be boasted about in the item description.
  • The per-pickleball price goes down when you buy them in larger quantities.
  • If the pickleballs don’t come with a carrying bag, you can store them in a gym bag. Just make sure you leave the court with as many balls as you came with!
  • Just like tennis balls, high-performance pickleballs do not last forever. You can expect anywhere from three to 10 games, depending on weather conditions and type of play, before they need to be replaced.
  • Yellow pickleballs are designed for indoor play, while orange ones are for outdoor games.
