Expert Reviews
What reviewers liked
You can capture video at 4K/30fps for maximum detail, but also at 1080p/120fps if you want smooth slo-mo playback.
The most impressive aspect of the TG-5 is that is shoots in the raw format. It might sound like a feature you don’t need, but in practice the option to to process an ORF file (an Olympus Raw Image file that stores unprocessed image data) is incredibly useful.
Olympus has done a nice job integrating the menus, dials and controls so that they offer multiple access points to settings, allowing you to quickly and efficiently get to the precise setting you want to change.
The TG-5 also provides the standard Picture Mode and Art Filter settings found on all current Olympus cameras. In addition, the White Balance settings include the ‘Keep the warm colour’ option as well as a dedicated underwater setting that compensates for the loss of reds with depth.
What reviewers didn't like
On occasion, the autofocus can struggle in low light, but works quickly and accurately enough outdoors.
the TG-5 can record in 4K video, but there is a catch. If you depress the record button, the TG-5 begins recording in Full HD 1080p resolution. Only if you actually turn the dial on the top of the camera to video mode can you then choose 4K mode, which offers 30fps (though Full HD 1080p tops-out at 60fps). That’s pointlessly confusing, but the resulting 4K video is at least sharp, smooth and well-saturated.
was disappointed to hear the grinding of the TG-5’s mechanism when zooming in or out of a scene while capturing video.
The Olympus Image Share (OI Share) app lets you select movie mode and adjust aperture, exposure compensation, ISO and white balance. Unfortunately, you can’t select 4K resolution via the remote control; resolution defaults to 1080p at 30 fps. Nor can you re-adjust the focus (or pull-focus) while shooting movies remotely, although you can configure the timer to record a short movie of up to 16 seconds
