From The Manufacturer

The 56K GameCube Modem Adapter is purely designed for online gaming–it doesn’t support regular Internet access or Web browsing. The adapter is easily installed, simply snapping into serial port 1 on the underside of the console and plugging into a standard phone line (an extra jack may be required). You must use your existing Internet Service Provider (ISP) for online access. Please be aware that some service providers, e.g., AOL, do not allow outside software to access their services without the use of a special login tool. Please contact your service provider if you’re not sure whether or not they allow this.

Expert Reviews

What reviewers liked

The modem fits snugly into the console.
- IGN
The adapter allows up to four controllers to be connected at once, meaning Gamecube-flavored Super Smash Bros. Ultimate parties are officially endorsed by Nintendo.

What reviewers didn't like

So far, Nintendo says the Modem Adapter is not included with the console and will be sold separately.
- IGN
It is odd to see Nintendo almost take a step backwards in the online arena with the GameCube, as the Famicom (Famicom Modem), SNES (X-BAND modem), and Nintendo 64 (N64DD) featured online elements, limited though they may have been.
Nintendo's track record is a bit dodgy when it comes to keeping products in stock
