An Overview On Comforter Covers
You spend a third of your life under the covers, so it goes without saying that you want those covers to be comfortable and attractive, in that order. As the biggest and most visible piece of your sheet set, your comforter sets the tone for the entire bedroom.
When buying a cover for that comforter, it’s good to first establish exactly what you’re buying — which is a duvet cover. There isn’t much difference between duvets and comforters, and many buyers use the terms interchangeably. But technically speaking, a duvet is a thick piece of fabric designed to go inside a cover, while a comforter is an all-in-one sheet that you can sleep under right out of the box. Don’t worry: Most outlets will know exactly what you mean either way.
The main advantage of a comforter with a cover is that it’s much easier to wash. Instead of having to launder a thick piece of sensitive fabric, you can simply slip the cover off and run it through. Of course, that does mean you’ll have to reassemble the duvet and cover after cleaning, and some covers are easier than others when it comes to that process. There will be clasps, buttons or ties at one side of the duvet, and bear in mind that they should be on the interior of the cover to prevent inadvertent tearing of the fabric.
Once your cover is on, it’s time for the fun part: Sleeping in it. That’s where the type of material makes a big difference. You’ll find several different types of cover fabric on the market, each of them with pros and cons.
Most budget comforter covers are made from some form of polyester blend, and most sleepers won’t have a problem with it. While not exactly the silkiest feel, it will do a nice enough job holding heat during those cold winter months. Aside from the price, the other main selling points of polyester are its durability and the ease with which you can wash it.
Cotton is a definite step up from polyester — most of the time. Quality can vary widely when it comes to cotton sheets, but you’ll know it when you’re sleeping under a good one. Cotton does tend to be very breathable, which means it’s a great choice for any weather. And while it might be prone to wrinkles, it’s otherwise easy to launder.
Microfiber covers are increasingly common, and they can be quite cozy. Aside from silk, there’s nothing quite like the feel of good microfiber sheets, which are made from a synthetic polyester nylon blend. You may need to care for these covers a bit more (and they’re prone to pilling if you don’t), but otherwise it’s a good choice for those who can afford it.
The Comforter Cover Buying Guide
Putting on a duvet cover can be a pain, but there’s a workaround: First, turn the cover inside out and lay it flat on the bed. Put the duvet on top of it, then roll them up together until you’ve got a nice fluffy cylinder. Invert the cover opening and bring it around the end of both sides, then fasten it up. Roll it back the way you came, give it a good fluff, and voila! You’re ready for bedtime.
