Expert Reviews

What reviewers liked

Clear gel in a tube that's convenient and easy to use and won't stain your clothing. No unpleasant smell.
Safe for ages 6 months and up, and it won't make the scar worse.
Mederma contains onion bulb extract which contains anti-inflammatory compounds and phenolic antioxidants. Another ingredient is allantoin which reduces itching, irritation, and dryness. Mederma Advanced Scar Gel works nicely on reducing the overall appearance of scars, eliminating redness, and improving skin texture.
Used for eight weeks on new scars, or three to six months on old ones, this fast absorbing gel is a solid option for diminishing scars that you feel undermine your confidence. Proven to work on old and new scars, it is recommended by doctors. It also contains onion bulb extract, which has been shown to significantly improve the appearance of new scars. Very affordable.

Mederma is a water-based, non-greasy gel, which the manufacturer states should not cause further acne breakouts or clogged pores.

What reviewers didn't like

Results still aren't as fast as some of the more potent brands. Could still cause a rash on sensitive skin.
Despite what all the commercials say, Mederma is not any better than petroleum jelly for improving the appearance of scars, and it is time intensive. The manufacturer recommends applying the cream three times a day for eight weeks on new scars and for three to six months on old scars. It's promoted by an extensive marketing campaign that's not backed by science. It's expensive compared with petroleum jelly.
It doesn’t work on reducing the appearance of hypopigmentation.
Not effective for every user. Takes a time and patience to see results. Very small tube for the price. Works better on newer scars.
- Heavy
Somewhat drying due to alcohol content, not enough allantoin which is the main active ingredient, forumlation is generic and not outstanding, did not really reduce scaring.
Although it can be used for many scars, it is not recommended for deep or puncture wounds or serious burns. The Mederma® tube has a rather large opening, so if you squeeze it too hard, you might get a lot of gel pouring out. This can lead to buildup.
There is not enough clinical evidence to prove that Mederma improves the appearance of scars better than petroleum jelly, such as Vaseline, which costs far less. Also, its effectiveness appears to be linked to whether a scar is raised or indented. Mederma’s formula does include some chemical ingredients, which may cause irritation for some users, and some people may be allergic to the onion extract.
Results require patience; side effects include irritation, itchiness, and skin redness; limited clinical research.
