Expert Reviews

What reviewers liked

The movie reinforces positive themes about courage and the value of brains over brawn and celebrates the sense of security a child feels at home with his or her parents.
Elsewhere, the talent is equally as impressive. Directors Uwe Heidschötter and Johannes Weiland fill every frame with a breathtaking beauty and the technical aspects of this film are astonishing on the eye, particularly the lighting during the night scenes. The camera work, not content with simply portraying these wonderful vistas and characters, becomes incredibly dynamic in parts, notably when the Gruffalo's child finds herself trapped on the ice.
The Gruffalo’s Child movie is setup up just like The Gruffalo movie. A squirrel narrates the story again. (Helena Bonham Carter is the voice of the squirrel.) The animation and lines are again perfect.
I enjoyed this movie as much as I enjoyed the first one, The Gruffalo.

What reviewers didn't like

This movie is a wonderful choice for families, but very young kids might find some of the animals a little frightening or be upset by the Mouse's initial peril when the two characters meet.
The end of the movie was a little scary for my 3 year old.
