Although the Kellogg brothers are rightfully credited for inventing cereal as we know it today, four decades before Corn Flakes hit the market, Dr. James Caleb Jackson came up with something called “granula.” This cereal was devised as a healthy, easy-to-serve breakfast option for Dr. Jackson’s sanitorium in Danville, New York, and was made using wheat flour and water. This mixture was baked until it hardened, then broken into smaller pieces and baked some more. Before it could be eaten, though, it had to be soaked in milk overnight to soften slightly, although reports state that it never became edible.
