The enameled cast iron inside and out makes this easy to clean and long-lasting. The curved edges make it nearly impossible for food to get stuck and caked on in the corners while cooking, which we appreciated for post-dinner dishwashing. This 6-Quart enamel Dutch oven is great for cooking, marinating, refrigeration and freezing. The color porcelain enamel on cast iron can be used on gas, electric, ceramic and induction cooktops, as well as in the oven. Not recommended for use on outdoor grills or over open outdoor flames. Not for use in microwaves. Lodge Color Porcelain Enamel on Cast Iron cookware is cast from molten iron in individual sand molds. The porcelain surface eliminates the need to season cast iron. The cast iron vessel has superior heat distribution and retention, evenly heating bottom sidewalls and even the lid. Tightly fitting lid seals in moisture. The excellent heat retention reduces the amount of energy needed for cooking. Three layers of very hard, glossy porcelain enamel are chip resistant and easy to clean. Lid knob is oven safe to 500 degrees Fahrenheit. The black rim on the pot is matte porcelain, not exposed cast iron. Hygienic porcelain enamel is non-reactive with food. The Lodge has bigger handles than most of the Dutch ovens we tested, making it much easier to take in and out of the oven. Its slightly curved shape keeps food from getting trapped in the corners of the pot, and its shorter sides and width allow for better searing, which imparts more flavor into finished dishes.

A respectable size for the average family, it’s well made so it’ll last years. It utilizes porcelain enamel on cast iron which means the glassy finish is bonded to the cast iron at high temperatures so that it becomes heat tolerant, while also impervious to water and other substances.

Enameled cast iron Dutch ovens are perfect for people who are comfortable with stovetop cooking. The glossy enamel coating ensures that the food sticks less to the pot, which makes cleaning and cooking much easier. And unlike traditional cast iron, you don’t need to season enameled cast iron cookware.  However, it’s important to note that the coating can chip if you’re not careful, so it’s best to cook without metal utensils that can scratch the surface.

The benefit of having a light interior is that you can clearly see when your ingredients are starting to brown. It also brings more light into the pot, so it’s easier to see the color of your food, which is important for meats and sauces. However, light interiors will often change color over time, and it will be easier to see cracks, lines or stains on the surface. With a darker interior, you won’t be able to see the scuffs and scratches as much, so the Dutch oven will keep its look for years to come. However, it’s also more difficult to see when your food is browning or the true color of meats and sauces as they cook.
  • Did you know that the lid of a Dutch oven can make the food even tastier? Look at the underside of lids to see whether they have rounded metal spikes. This kind of design helps condensation drip back onto the food. This is perfect for braising meats. Lids without these spikes still help the condensation drip back down, but it slides down the inside walls of the pots instead of dripping directly from the lid.
