Members of the military use tactical notebooks to write things down when in the field, and anyone who doesn’t have one with them could be reprimanded appropriately. Covers are made specifically made to protect these notebooks, and they have holders and zippered compartments to keep writing implements and other items safe.

Many such covers contain rings or other types of fasteners to keep a notebook in place. Different compartments may be attached to the inside cover, although outside pockets may also be found. You’ll want to consider the type of closure you prefer; reliable hook-and-loop closures don’t get stuck like zippers, and will open and close faster. Some are made with handles that you can wrap around your wrist, which can be very convenient when in the field. Rubber backings are another excellent feature that makes it easier to write when on the move.

You can find these notebook covers in a few primary colors, plus camo patterns. They need to be small since the notebooks are small; if the cover’s too big, the notebook will move around inside, which will be a distraction. Bigger notebook sizes are available as well, but you’ll want to consider how easy they are to carry with you either in a pocket or a bag.

These covers don’t cost a lot of money, either. Even if you spring for extra features, tactical notebook covers should be an affordable way to keep your field notes safe no matter what conditions you put them through.
