Expert Reviews

What reviewers liked

The only unfinished bed frame we recommend, and it’s a great choice for DIY enthusiasts who want a customized look. The blond wood is nice on its own, but it also takes stain or paint well, giving you the option of personalizing your frame. The straightforward silhouette also lends itself to whatever creative design you may come up with. Without any treatment, the frame over time will patina slightly in direct sunlight.
Considered a minimalist Swedish design. It is made from unfinished poplar wood, without any color, stain, or added chemicals. The top of the frame is 15 inches above the floor, with a bottom clearance of 12 inches from floor to frame. A great choice for those who like to customize their space. Its unfinished wooden frame can be stained or painted. (There are helpful tips included in the instructions.) You can also purchase rolling drawers, a trundle bed, or taller legs (which add 3 inches) to maximize your space.
What’s great about the material is that it’s very solid. The unfinished surface poses a great opportunity for buyers to personalize the bed by painting, varnishing, or using clear lacquer on the wood. You can paint it any color to match the décor of the room or apply varnish that will highlight the natural wood grains.
The perfect platform bed for the minimalist décor. Made in the USA of chemical-free, unfinished poplar wood, you can enjoy its natural beauty or stain it in a color of your choice. KD even provides instructions to guide you through the process. This is by far our favorite wooden platform bed frame.
For those who want a platform with visible wood not covered in upholstery, the KD Frames Nomad Plus is a good option. This minimalist Swedish design puts an emphasis on the clean, natural look of unfinished tulip poplar hardwood combined with the modernity of a 15-inch profile. The sturdy construction and 2.8-inch slat spacing allow this frame to support up to 600 pounds—more than enough for most mattresses. And the slats are flush with the top of the platform frame, allowing the mattress to sit on top of the platform rather than inside the rails.
For a total of 16 sturdy 2-by-1-inch wooden boards, the KD Frames bed had two extra slats than the other frames. The bed’s strength comes from the small 2.8-inch gap between each piece (second only to the CB2 frame’s 2.5-inch spread). You receive a 68-pound platform bed frame that previous Wirecutter tester Kevin Purdy said he could resist “energetic jump-ons” and “190-pound body smash” with assured indifference, based on these specs.
This is the solid wood platform bed frame that I bought. And it is affordable! Their hardwood platform bed frames are: Made from kiln dried Tulip Poplar hardwood, Responsibly grown in Virginia forests, No chemicals applied in the factory, Smoothed wood, Unfinished.

What reviewers didn't like

The bare wood of this model is susceptible to nicks, cuts, pen marks, cat claws, and other household agents of destruction. We’ve also found this frame’s availability to be somewhat inconsistent.
Might be a little squeaky.
The standard model of this platform bed features slats that are just under 4.5 inches apart and that’s a problem for some foam and latex mattresses.
