What experts liked

Setup and pairing could not have been easier – Great to see how easy this was after some bad experiences with Bluetooth technology in the past. It was as simple as installing the BBQ Go app, turning on the device and following a few onscreen instructions. Your granddaddy could use this thermometer.
- Smoked BBQ Source
The device itself is compact and durable. You can fit the thermometer in your hand and it feels well put-together. On the back are magnets for mounting to the side of the grill or even the fridge.
- Smoking Meat Geeks
The LCD display was clear and bright and did not wash out in the sunlight. It performed great in both low light and bright light conditions. The rotating display function was an awesome addition too.
- The Grilling Life
Download the application and connect it to your smartphone. You’re good to go. Now start monitoring your cooking temperature from as far as 150 feet.
- Cooking for Profit
The Inkbird unit has just an on-off switch and a single button. That coupled with the BBQ Go app make this thermometer super user-friendly, the whole thing is a cinch to set up.
- Food Fire Friends
Magnetic Back to mount unit to the smoker/oven (up to 176F surface temp)
- Smoking Meat Forums
The Inkbird IBT-4XS has a large LED Screen, rechargeable lithium ion battery (with charging cable) and four temperature probes.
- Indoor Grill Source
The thermometer has many presets that can be customized; temperature, and timer alarms.
- Stonewall's BBQ
The Inkbird IBT-4XS has one of the most streamlined, simple designs around. It includes four temperature probes with long wires and clips to make it easier to position the food on your grill without anything getting in the way.
- Grill Guru
Rechargeable Battery: We love that the IBT-4XS is built with a rechargeable battery because it means more money savings. It fully charges for about two hours via USB cable. You can also charge this unit while in use to ensure uninterrupted service.
- Boat Basin Cafe
While some thermometers are based on AA batteries, this device was constructed with a 1000mAh rechargeable lithium-ion battery.
- Nerd Tech
It has a clear and large display whose red LEDs are easily visible even in bright sunlight.
- 3DInsider
The temperature range is 32 to 572 degrees Fahrenheit with quick measurements, and 32 to 482 degrees Fahrenheit with continuous temperature monitoring.
- Heavy
Another positive for me was the fact that you can’t ever insert the probe incorrectly because if you do so, the device will show random temperatures to alert you. So even if I’m in a hurry, the probe is always placed right.

What experts didn't like

No waterproofing – While the probes themselves can get a little wet, the main unit does not have any waterproofing and we wouldn’t recommend using this thermometer in wet conditions.
- Smoked BBQ Source
The Cables are long, but hard to wind up. They get tangled easily when cooking with several of them at once. It’s great to have this extra length when you’re doing a lot smoking on a huge pit, but the extra length is a bit frustrating when you’re not.
- Smoking Meat Geeks
The INKBIRD IBT-4XS ships with 4 meat probes. I would really like to see INKBIRD exchange one of the meat probes for a shorter, snub-nosed ambient probe. When using the meat probe with the included grate clips, the probe is a little long making it harder to position right.
- The Grilling Life
Inkbird IBT-4XS Thermometer may not monitor more than 482°F. Which some may find too low.
- Cooking for Profit
Battery is not replaceable
- Food Fire Friends
If Bluetooth loses connection you lose graph data.
- Smoking Meat Forums
Probes are only made for meat
- Stonewall's BBQ
Maximum temperature for continuous monitoring is 482 degrees F
- Grill Guru
Ear-Splitting Alarm: The alarm mimics the sound of a smoke alarm so its ear-splitting when you’re nearby.
- Boat Basin Cafe
This meat thermometer doesn’t come with an ambient probe. One would be useful for cooking in an oven.
- 3DInsider
Loses Bluetooth connectivity fairly easily
- Heavy
Short Bluetooth range
- Nesthood

An Overview On BBQ Temperature Controllers

With 63% of Americans frying up their grills monthly, chances are you spend a good deal of time barbecuing. The downside to many grills is their fluctuating temperatures, which can leave meat either unevenly cooked or completely dry. Fortunately, you can purchase a BBQ temperature controller to correct this problem.

When shopping for the best BBQ temperature controller, you need to first make sure that the unit is compatible with your specific grill or smoker. For example, the BBQube TempMaster Automatic Temperature Controller works with Big Green Egg, Kamado Joe, Primo, Vision Grill and Akorn Kamado grills. Other controllers come with adapters that allow them to be used with grills that have small, medium and large vents.

Check the BBQ temperature controller’s ease of use. You want to go with a unit that can be installed in minutes, like the LavaLock 35 cfm Variable Speed 4-Probe Automatic BBQ Temperature Controller. This controller is also designed to operate with just one button, so you won’t have to spend a great deal of time trying to figure out how to use it effectively.

Look for a BBQ temperature controller that is able to monitor the internal temperature of your food, as well as control the overall temperature inside the grill. The DigiQ Digital Meat BBQ Temperature Controller not only does this, but it also has a loud beep that will alert you when your meat has reached the perfect level of doneness. That means you’ll enjoy a juicy and tender piece of meat that’s just right.

Consider whether you’d like a BBQ temperature controller that’s more high-tech. The Flame Boss 500-WiFi Smoker BBQ Temperature Controller has an online dashboard with graphs and temperature readings that you can view from your smartphone or tablet. It’s even compatible with Amazon Alexa and Google Home.

The BBQ Temperature Controller Buying Guide

  • Not all BBQ temperature controllers come with the necessary adapter to be able to use the device with your grill. You may need to purchase an adaptor kit separately.
  • If the BBQ temperature controller doesn’t come with its own storage box, you’ll want to consider purchasing one separately. You want to protect the housing and the probes from dust, dirt and outdoor elements.
  • Check to see whether the BBQ temperature controller has been waterproofed. If not, you won’t be able to use it when the weather turns south.
  • Some BBQ temperature controllers have long cables that can become tangled. You can use binder clips or even hair clips to keep the cables organized.
  • Since most BBQ temperature controllers have meat probes, they will need to be cleaned properly after each use. Fortunately, this is easily accomplished with a rag that has been soaked in soapy dishwater. After the probes have been cleaned of any food, they need to be dried with a lint-free cloth. Never place the controller’s housing in the water, as it will damage the unit and render it unusable.
  • BBQ temperature controllers are available in a wide range of prices. These prices are dependent upon design, accessories and whether or not the device has Wi-Fi capabilities. You’ll find the BBQube TempMaster Automatic Temperature Controller is one of the most affordable models on the market. You’ll pay a moderate price for the DigiQ Digital Meat BBQ Temperature Controller and the LavaLock 35 cfm Variable Speed 4-Probe Automatic BBQ Temperature Controller. The Flame Boss 500-WiFi Smoker BBQ Temperature Controller, however, comes in with a higher price tag, as it is compatible with Amazon Alexa and Google Home.
