What reviewers liked

The first ingredient in this dog food is chicken meal. Chicken meal is considered a meat concentrate and contains nearly 300% more protein than fresh chicken.
You can find chickpeas, lentils, etc., as ingredients in many grain free dog foods. These ingredients do have some good points. They are high in plant protein compared to corn and wheat. They are also low glycemic which is better for dogs that have to watch their blood sugar levels such as diabetic dogs.
For Horizon Legacy dog food formulas, the first five ingredients usually contain several different protein sources. Peas are often included in the first five ingredients, along with pea starch. Some of the proteins that are included are chicken meal, salmon meal, chicken and turkey meal. Horizon Legacy dog food formulas are grain-free, which is different from some other Horizon formulas.
Something that I don’t talk about often but is important in a dog food is the temperature that it is prepared at. Many kibbles are rapidly cooked at high temperatures which can burn away good nutrients. Horizon knows this, so they use a lower-temperature cooking process to do their best to retain as many nutrients as possible during the manufacturing process.
The Amicus line of products is specifically designed to meet the unique nutritional needs of mini and small-breed dogs. These products offer a 76% animal protein inclusion rate to meet the high-protein and high-energy needs of smaller dogs. Amicus food comes in three grain-free formulas – one for puppies, one for adult dogs, and one for senior dogs and weight management. These formulas feature quality ingredients like fresh turkey, chicken meal, red lentils, and green peas.

What reviewers didn't like

Some people might express concern about the flax in the food. Flax has some benefits such as plant-sourced omega-3 but the healthiest form of omega-3 for dogs comes from marine sources. Dogs can’t do much with omega-3 from plant sources. Flax also contains phytoestrogens that can interfere with a dog’s hormones. This can be a problem even if you have a spayed or neutered dog. It can be disastrous if you are a dog breeder.
Some dog owners experienced an increase in the number of bowel movements and the amount of stool that their dog passed every day after switching to this food. I wasn’t able to verify the amount of food they were feeding them (they may have needed to decrease the amount), but I also suspect that the high amount of fiber in the foods may be the culprit.
