Large holes allow water to escape quickly, but also make it easy for food to squeeze out. Small holes keep the food in, but create a slow drain of water which means the food continues to over cook in hot water. In our design tests, the best performing designs used mesh style materials with tiny holes 2 to 3 mm large. When designing our colander, we experimented with different materials; ceramics, plastics, and stainless steel. We also tried several different shapes, including some innovative collapsible versions. In the end, we found that the best material was one we trusted: Stainless steal. The best, most reliable performing shape, was the traditional bowl shape. Our design innovation wasn't in reinventing what already worked well, but in making the best quality colander possible. The HOLM colander looks pretty and does the job. Sturdy handles wont get hot easily when draining hot foods, and make it easy to lower the loaded colander into a sink (even when wearing cooking mitts!) Great for washing fruits and vegetables. Washing fruits and vegetables is the best way to reduce your risks for food-borne illness. There's no need for expensive detergents. Research at the University of Florida has shown that the most effective way to clean fruits and vegetables is to soak for 2 minutes in clean cold water with a 10 percent vinegar solution, then rinse under running water in a colander. You can pick up a cheap plastic colander at any major retailer or home goods store for a couple of bucks, but it won’t last, and plastic can absorb strong odors over time. A more thoughtful approach to purchasing this kitchen standby will pay off in the long run.
Colanders are perforated bowls that you use to drain or rinse foods like spaghetti, quinoa or chopped veggies. They typically have a long handle or a grip on each side so that you can grab and tilt the colander without burning your hands. - The perfect colander or strainer will be made of dense, rust-proof materials, like stainless steel. Silicone strainers are also a great option. They’re less likely to create a breeding ground for bacteria than other materials. Plastic colanders may crack or absorb odors over time.
- Think about what types of meals you frequently cook. This will determine the size of the holes you’ll need in your strainer. If you make lots of rice or quinoa, look for a strainer with very small holes. Models with double layers of mesh are also helpful; they’ll keep small grains in your strainer while still draining water. If you love thicker pastas like spaghetti, a colander with larger holes will suffice.
- The placement of the handle or grips on your colander is also important. Handles should be long enough to keep your hands safely away from hot water.
