What experts liked
This unit has a digital screen where you can set the timer or even use the delayed-start function, which is unique to this steamer. The size of the unit was just right for any countertop. It's big enough to accommodate a fair amount of food but not cumbersome.

One extraordinary safety feature of this steamer is that it warns the user when the water level in the bowl is low. The steamer will turn off and start beeping. You will see this display ‘- -‘. The great thing is that you do not have to open the steamer to refill the water. Just pull out the water drawer. You can also keep a check on the water level. When filled, you can securely switch on the steamer and continue cooking.
- KitchenBrandz
This 5 1/2-quart electric steamer has two tiers that stack for cooking then nest for more compact storage, so it’s both large and small. You can use just one tier for cooking when you don’t have as much food to cook, or use both tiers when you’re cooking for a crowd. The tiers have a removable center divider, so you can keep the broccoli from frolicking with the carrots, or remove the divider to cook a large filet of fish.
- The Spruce Eats
The basket gets nested inside one another to save space and will require a little space inside your cabinet.
- The Keen Hunter
Cleanup can be done easily—you can take away the bowl and the tray which are dishwasher-friendly. The entire ensemble feels durable and substantial.
- Ode Magazine
If durability and affordability are what you look for in an electric steamer, then the 37530A 5.5-quart food steamer is the unit to go for. This electric vegetable steamer will make your mealtime more exciting and your plate more nutritionally-balanced. Use it to steam a variety of foods including delicate fish, clams, oysters, mussels, hot dogs, and chicken breasts.
- Ah Joo
Hamilton Beach always delivers high kitchen appliances, and this one isn’t an exception. It has excellent features that ease the operation. The automatic warm enables food to remain hot while digital touchpad control panel allows convenient menu setting. Furthermore, the water level indicator alerts you when water is running low to avoid running dry.
- Do Best Products
The Hamilton Beach steamer comes with two bowls to cook large quantities of food. You can also remove the divider between the bowls and steam even larger food, like a chicken part, or a huge head of broccoli. There’s also a rice bowl that’s perfect for white or brown rice and small foods. The thing also cooks eggs upright from soft to hard-cooked.

What experts didn't like
It didn't take an exceptionally long time to clean this unit, but it was more difficult than other steamers. All of those holes are necessary to allow steam through to cook your food, but all of those nooks and crannies collect food, and it can be difficult to get every corner clean.
- Top Ten Reviews
It can be a little time consuming to clean the steamer.
- KitchenBrandz
Since some users might want their food to stay heated after it’s done steaming, this product switches to a “warm” mode automatically after your allotted cooking time is over. When we experimented with this feature, we were disappointed, though: We left our extra vegetables in the steamer on the warm setting, and after just five minutes, they were too soft and mushy to enjoy.
- The Spruce Eats
Among the complaints were growing mold at the bottom.

An Overview On Food Steamers

There’s no shortage of options when it comes to food steamers. In fact, there are so many different styles, you’ll first have to decide the type of steamer you want to use. One of the easiest, most affordable, ways to add a steamer to your kitchen appliance collection is by choosing a steamer basket that fits into your existing pots and pans. You can even find steamer baskets that will slide handily into your pressure cooker.

Another popular option is the steamer set, which features the large outer pot and the steamer insert that fits inside. Like the steamer basket, you’ll use this type of steamer on your stove, so it’s important to make sure you choose an option that will work on the type of stovetop you have. Many are made from stainless steel, so they’ll work with gas or induction stoves and should also be safe for ceramic cooktops.

One last type of steamer is the dedicated appliance. These set up on any surface and include everything you need to steam food. The downside of this type is that you’ll need somewhere to store it when it isn’t in use, but the upside is that it keeps your stovetop free for cooking other items.

DWYM Fun Fact

When you think of food steamers, your mind probably immediately goes to rice and vegetables. But steam cooking can bring out the best in a wide range of food types. Shelled seafood like crab legs and shrimp are great for steaming, along with fresh corn and potatoes. Steamers also bring out the nutrients in leafy green vegetables such as collard greens and bok choy, which you can eat as is or use in smoothies. Broccoli, cabbage and cauliflower also taste delicious after being steamed. If you have frozen leftovers, you can use a steamer to defrost and cook them for moist, fresh-taking results.

The Food Steamer Buying Guide

  • Safety is a top consideration when you’re considering any cooking appliance. With a steamer, take an especially close look at the handles. Some steamers promote their handles as safe to touch even without oven mitts, but you may want to test this before trusting it. Some consumers report that the handles get hotter than advertised.
  • The design of the steamer contributes to how evenly it can cook the food inside. Many basket-based steamers have a thick aluminum core covered in stainless steel on either side to promote even cooking. Other types of steamers emit steam from the top of the unit down to ensure heat is distributed as evenly as possible.
  • As you’re shopping for a steamer, pay attention to the lid, as well. Some steamers include self-basting lids to lock flavor in. Many others have clear lids so you can monitor the progress of the food inside.
  • If you’re not a fan of handwashing dishes, look for a steamer that is dishwasher safe.
  • Some steamers go beyond steaming food to let you also boil, heat and simmer items. If you plan to use your steamer in the oven, make sure it’s rated for oven use.
  • Stainless steel is typically the best bet when it comes to cookware you want to last.
